Hi! So I'm applying SCEA to Yale on Monday, and my Common Application Personal Statement is 1400 words. I've cut it down from like 3000, so its really at the bear minimum. Is this too long? Should I submit a different essay? HELP PLEASE

There is no need to write a whole new essay. This is a pretty long essay, and the majority of essays that long are pretty verbose, but there are always exceptions. Even if you might feel exposed, I strongly suggest you have others look over your essay. (At the same time, remember not to take every bit of advice: the ultimate editing decisions are up to you.)
A few quick tips:
Avoid saying “and” as much as you can.
Microsoft Word spell check is sometimes wrong. When in doubt, grab a grammar book or google it.
Avoid using loads of adjectives. Instead, explain things through verbs, dialogue, etc.
Remember that the adcoms may well have read over 30 essays by the time they pick up yours. Make sure you’re general writing style is captivating enough so that 1400 words “feels” like a good round 600.

Best of luck

Thanks so much! I’ll be sure to do all of that. Yeah, people reading have said it flows nicely, and is a ‘quick read’.
Good luck to you too!

i think you mean the “bare” minimum, lol. dont worry, my english teacher who went to columbia said that an essay is too long only if there are parts of it that are irrelevant to the purpose of the paper. obviously, a 10 page paper would not be appropriate, but if 1,400 words is what it takes to tell your story properly, then its fine. just dont ramble. my essay was 1,000 words so not too far off and im not concerned.

wow, you’re right, basic english fail…lol. Ok, thats very encouraging advice, I’ve made sure its all relevant to my story. Thanks!
