Essay Topic: Suicide?

Is death or suicide (not your own) a bad topic for an essay?..what if had a big impact on you?

It's one of those topics where the danger of straying into cliche/trite territory is high. But if it's well written and goes deeper than "___'s death was sad/", it could be a great essay.

I wrote my personal statement on the death of my goldfish. It was well written i'd say.

Make it creative, but if it's about someone you know and care for deeply it's kind of hard. Don't write a pitiable essay you will get rejected.

I used to be an admissions counselor and I certainly read a lot of essays about how a classmates' death or suicide changed the applicants life. I confess that at times they felt clicheed, but I understand that it can be a tranformative event when you lose a loved one, or a classmate dies. It's an okay topic, but I think you need to make an effort to make it sincere, personal and original. I know it's hard to know what would be 'original' when you can't read the other 1,000 essays submitted, but use your creativity.

I don't think the topic is as important as the way the essay is written.
