Topics that are too heavy?

Hi everyone, I just saw someone with a similar question about this in the Yale thread and needed to ask.

I'm not going to go into details, but I lost a best friend to suicide in my early teen years. I was considering writing about it in college essays, because that event actually influenced me deeply and was the catalyst for a large part of what I do today. Do you think this would be too heavy, or even appropriate for the adcoms? I would fully understand if they don't want to read something "depressing" and as personal as this.

Thank you.

If it affects who are right now, you should write about it. Admissions wants to know who you are and how you have been influenced. Personal essays are a good topic, so long as they are not too generic.

I think it would be fine, so long as the event drove you to be a better person. I would also focus on how it made you a better person.
