Is it too risky to discuss a political point of view within an admissions personal statement? Such as the relations between the United States and Israel.
Yes it’s risky. Even if it’s well reasoned and well written, if your essay ends up in the hands of someone who strongly disagrees it will require an extra effort on their part to see part the difference of opinion to the no doubt wonderful addition to their campus that you would be. Why take that chance? The other issue is that it is harder to convey in political essay the kind of person you are and what you will add to the campus (other than a strongly held political view). If you still want to go this route, I would take the 'I had one perspective but after experience X, I realized that my perspective was parochial because of Y." That mitigates (although may not entirely avoid) the charge of dogmatism and gives you more room to talk about your personal experiences and how they shaped you.
I still think you best bet, however, is to find a topic that isn’t going to raise hackles even accidentally.
