<p>Basically the essay is a way to show the admissions committee who you are beyond the numbers. They'll give you prompts to answer on the application forms.</p>
<p>The college essay is usually personal and about you. You should not write about controversial issues, or any issues unless specifically asked to because that would be too impersonal. They are not looking just to see if you can write a good essay and have an opinion. They are looking to see what kind of thinker you are, what experiences you've had and some insight as to what you'd bring to the school.</p>
