I was wondering if anyone wrote any essays in the past about academic struggles but somehow you overcame it. Past applicants please. I'm trying to figure how to portray it so that I'm not trying to make any excuses.

If this is your goal, then don't dwell on how you got into the mess or how difficult it was. Emphasize how you handled it, how successful you were, and what you learned about yourself in the process.

Maybe these academic struggles stemmed from some outside factor and if they did, you can point them out and how you overcame it. And how you overcame it depends on each person. Also it may be best to make sure you STRESS what you have learned from it. And how you will continue to do so. Your best bet is to tell the truth or at least half of it but stress that this realization will prevent you from doing the same thing because it's really important to continue your academics because of your dreams, etc.

You could consider submitting a supplementary statement about your difficulties and using the personal essay to reveal more of yourself.
