what are everyones opinions about essays on a cool experience while traveling? i wrote about climbing a mountain during a community service trip abroad but after reading the extremely cynical and dire warnings about not writing about such things im starting to panic. i have to have this done by tomorrow-and all these warnings in "how to write a college essay" are starting to get to me. the climbing experience was amazing and intesne, but not life-changing, and i'm reluctant to turn the mountain into a metaphore for my overcoming challenges. im worried it will come off as adcoms interpreting me as privilaged or spoiled and the essay won't make any other statement.
opinions?

i dont think it'll make you look spoiled at all..it was for a community service project first off, not vacation..for instance, i would consider those able to afford habitats for humanity privileged, definately NOT spoiled

plus, as long as its well-written and you really like it, i'm sure you'll be fine..i dont think you want to be writing a whole new essay anways lol

It doesn't sound spoiled at all; the only way I could think of a travel-themed essay sounding spoiled would be if the writer took the privilege for granted. You obviously have not done that; you've written about the intensity of the experience, and that's great.

Furthermore (and I'm not sure if this applies to you specifically, but maybe to other readers who wrote about traveling), if traveling, be it for community service or simply for leisure, is a part of your life, there's nothing wrong with telling the adcoms about it. They want to learn about the whole you, after all.

And I agree; you don't need to make the mountain into a metaphor. It seems as if the experience speaks for itself.

Good luck getting your app in!!

I agree. I don't think this sounds spoiled at all. On the contrary, you sound like you were actually giving something back, which is impressive.
