Do you have to adhere strictly to the Common App's length requirement? Currently, my main essay is over 600 words and my EC essay is about 300. I might be able to cut the EC down a little but the main essay in particular works very well as it is IMO and I don't want to cut it. Is it ok to go over the limit?

If you greatly exceed a word limit, you put yourself at a disadvantage in comparison with others who have the conciseness and self-control, the keenness with words, to write a strong essay AND stay at or near that limit.

I certainly do not advise going anywhere near double the word limit on an essay. Would you submit a main essay that was 1000 words?

If my experience with reading hundreds of college essays is any indication, these essays can be cut, and improved for the cutting.

There are always ways to cut out extra words or sentences even if you don’t think you can. Try having someone critique your essay to take out the unnecessary things and see if that helps. It’s always better to do what is directed than try and go over!!!

safer to stick to the instructions
