Hey guys..
I was about to start writing my college essays and had a few small questions

which essays are more important.. the common app ones, or the supplement ones?

is it a bad idea to have two essays (one common app and one supplemental essay) focusing on one extra curricular (but have completely different approaches to both of them)?

BOTH are very important especially at top college. Actually for that matter, all colleges. It’s not necessarily bad to have essays that focus on one extracurricular, it just depends on how you present them. You may accidently send the message that you have no other talents, etc. It is quite possible though to tie your one extracurricular activity into both essays to create a strong application… so I guess it’s on a case-by-case basis.

I don’t want to encourage you to slack off on the common essays, because they are still very important. But the fact is, they’re usually seen by admissions committees as general “tell a story about yourself” essays. The supplemental essays are going to be a bit more important, because you’re telling the school only about things they actually want to know.

I’d say they have equal importance in the application process. The common app is suppose to allow the admissions ppl see a new side of you. to see who you are and know that you are human, not merely just a bunch of numbers of GPA, SAT/ACT scores, what not. you know?

supplements are key too in saying, you really care about attending my university and the strength of the essay is equivalent to your desire to be at the university.
