I'm looking at the possibility of establishing residency to help me pay for UCSD. I'm not entirely sure how this process goes, but I have read a lot of material on it. I have a few questions regarding this.

How easy/difficult is it to work a job while attending school? I'm looking at jobs that involve my major (CS, if I can get in.). I know a guy who works for Sony Online Entertainment, and he's checking with his supervisor there as well as looking for other opportunities in the area for me.

How long does this process take? From what I can tell, it takes 2 years, but I'm not entirely sure.

Is it possible to live in residence halls on campus during this time, or must I have my own separate apartment?

If anyone has gone through this process, I'd really appreciate just an overview of what the process looked like for them. I'm trying to decide if this is the route I want to take, and I don't have much time to make the choice.

I have read through that, and from what I can tell, I should be able to declare residency two years into my schooling. I’m really wondering what it is like to go through the actual process. Also, how long will it be until I can file my FAFSA as an independant? Can I do that for 2014-2015 or do I need to wait?

@Biinary: Here is another link about residency <a href=“UC Legal - Office of the General Counsel | UCOP”>UC Legal - Office of the General Counsel | UCOP;
I am a California resident so I do not have any first hand experience on establishing residency other than information I have come across on this and other websites. A CC poster @liveonboca might be able to answer some more detailed questions since I noticed she had gone through establishing residency recently and has posted information.

@DrGoogle: So I would be paying OOS tuition for 2 years, then I would start to receive in-state tuition? Could I file financially independent on the FAFSA those two years and possibly receive more aid?

Not according to the link above because it states 2 years prior to the residence determination date of the term he proposes to attend the University. But I do know of a case where the student is from Colorado and the mom moved with her here for one year and establish residency that way.
