karenoona, look for tokenadults FAQ thread... I'm surprised this hasn't been moved already!

Siemprecuriosa - it said in the email I received that if I didn't send it in it would be fine. I'm guessing they just wouldn't count your ethnicity. You can still send in the form and mark that you're not enrolled in a tribe, but I don't think they would classify you as NA. Don't worry, I don't think they'd hold it against you since you marked on your original app that you're not enrolled.

Are you NA enough to be enrolled? Would you have joined the tribe had it had nothing to do with admissions? If so, I would contact your local tribe and enroll now and let Yale know in the form that you have. If you aren't really interested in joining your tribe though, or can't, you can just choose one of the options above. Good luck!

Thanks, daxzzler. That makes me feel VERY relieved. :) I think, blood quantum-wise, I am just .0025 percent under the minimum requirement, unfortunately. It becomes a moot point anyway, though, because none of my ancestors signed the Baker Roll of 1924, another one of the requirements to joining the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians.

I was always interested in the tribe, even before it became an issue for admissions. And, even though I haven't come up with enough proof to officially enroll in a tribe, I still had a wonderful time researching my family history, and I will probably continue my research even after admissions have come and gone. So, it's not like I didn't gain anything from the experience.

This is Yale's procedure. It's not legally mandated, and, no, you don't have to be a registered member of a tribe to fit the federal definition of "American Indian or Alaska Native,"

although Yale gets to decide how its own admission process works, within broad legal limits.

See the main FAQ thread

for more details, not all specific to Yale. Note that Yale admits a large number of students each year officially reported to the federal government as "race/ethnicity unknown."

What if you are 1/8th NA, have been minimally involved in your tribe, are not federally enrolled… should I still check both white and NA, or not? Seems most discussion has been about Yale, what about other schools? Princeton, Dartmouth, Georgetown? Anyone have info?
