Hey guys,
I’m new to College Confidential and I noticed the College Search option doesn’t let you search for universities outside of the U.S. I have been trying to search all over the web for European universities with good International Relations/Foreign Affairs programs. Does anyone have any in mind? Preferably in the Western European side and a non American-European university like Richmond.
Also, does Oxford University have a Undergraduate International Relations program? I think it has a masters one, but I couldn’t find a undergraduate one.
Thank you!
P.S. I’m sorry if this is the wrong forum for the discussion.
Oxford does not have UG IR- the closest they have are History & Politics and Politics, Philosophy & Economics. At Cambridge the nearest is “Human, Social, and Political Sciences”. LSE, the University of Edinburgh, Durham and St Andrews all have very highly ranked IR programs. For all except for Oxford, Cambridge and LSE, if you are on the strong side of the specific requirements listed on the website you are very likely to get a place.
In France, Sciences Po has dual-degree programs in International Affairs with either Columbia (in NY) or LSE, in which you spend 2 years in each university and graduate with degrees from both. It is taught through English, though I think you do have to study French while you are in France.
Finally, there is a website that lists all of the undergrad courses available in Europe, that lets you filter by language and topic. This should take you to the IR courses (broadly defined) in English in the EU, but if not you can go to the home page & search again:
Thank you. I’ve looked into LSE, and Science Po, although I didn’t hear of the dual-degree program. I’ve heard of St.Andrews IR program, but am not very interested in it, because of the area and so many Americans go there a would prefer to have a very culturally different experience. Thank you for the other mentions and the website link.
he he… I have the same view of St A’s but felt obliged to include it in the list…
I don’t know if you’re still looking since this was a couple months ago, but there is a great website that’s a little like the UK version of College Confidential, which is called “The Student Room”- you can check there for more opinions about good schools for IR. Other schools I can think of for IR off the top of my head (besides Sciences Po, St Andrews, LSE, and Edinburgh) could be King’s College London (KCL), SOAS (part of university of London, if you are looking for african, Middle East, or Asian areas of concentration), sometimes Warwick is mentioned, but not sure about that one. I’m in the same boat as you- I’m looking to major in IR, and I’m looking at overseas BA degree programs in the UK and Europe, as well as the U.S. Personally, I liked U of Edinburgh a lot, as well as Sciences Po. Edinburgh is in Scotland, so in the same location as St Andrews, but is much less isolated (doesn’t have that tiny feel), and usually gets less American applicants than St Andrews, but is still internationally ranked for IR. Sciences Po is really great as well. You will have to become fluent in French at some point, but they do have an English speaking campus away from the main one where a lot of non-French internationals go for their first year. Also, Sciences Po guarantees admission into their Masters program for those that complete their BA successfully. Plus, they have the dual degree mentioned! Both schools also have good study abroad options (lol you could even study “abroad” in the US). Additionally, KCL has a well ranked IR program. One of my teachers grew up in the U.S. but went to KCL and lived in London for five years- she loved the college!
Ok sorry for such a long post, but good luck!!
