We were there today as well. My husband, normally very cynical, had to admit he was impressed. He even told my DD that he was happy for her and that it was clearly a good fit for her. Yeah! Always good to have Daddy’s stamp of approval…
Everyone seemed genuinely happy to be there, students, teacher and administrators alike. Parents very friendly, found a bunch of day student parents, and many on the same sport team as DD, so that was great. (since they are the ones cheering at the sport events) Especially good as there are only a handful of day students, so I was happy to find some.
Most of the attending students had already decided on Choate, but a few were still checking out other places.
Food was good, and facilities were great, everyone approachable.
Checked out the Math and the Science Program, met some department heads and talked to the coaches of the three sports.
Best sight was the multitude of flags leading up to the entrance of the performing arts center. Very impressive!
We were actually there on Monday. Snow in the morning! I would say about 1/2 the attendees had other acceptances and were re-visting three or more schools this week. There was a girl we met who was accepted to Exeter, Andover, Groton, St. Paul’s, and Choate. She must have be a very talented young lady!
@itcannotbetrue: I don’t see that Choate has published next year’s academic calendar.
Congratulations to all of you who went to revisit days. This is our last year, and I can confirm that your last-day impressions will greatly exceed your first-day impressions. We are so sorry to be coming to the end of this fabulous ride. Our son has received a stellar education (even he says so), become an athlete, made life-long friends, learned to endure hardship with grace and victory with humility, and is off to one of his first-choice colleges. Although we are all very happy, graduation will be bittersweet as we close this significant chapter in our lives.
As others have indicated, Dr. Curtis has plans to leapfrog this already amazing school to new highs. Those who are coming up will have the benefit of the new facilities, new technologies, and new teaching methodologies, all carefully crafted to provide a learning experience that will prepare students to lead creatively in the increasingly information-heavy world they were born into. Dr. Curtis believes that, in the future, Choate will be the school known for resilient students who know how to fail on their way to success and know how to navigate well in that space where art intersects technology, the world we live in.
Congratulations again to those of you who have this wonderful choice in your BS pocket.
Acceptance packet includes a Travel Calendar. Aug 25th, invited football players arrive. 28th Prefects and Invited Student Athletes arrive. 30th Registration for all of the above and 6th formers/PGs.
August 31st registration for ALL 3rd formers and new 4th/5th formers.
also on 31st: Matriculation Ceremony for all New students. Classes begin Wednesday, September 2nd.
Parents Weekend: Oct 22-24.
BTW, even in public schools, students start fall sport practices earlier than school begins. It is expected that Varsity athletes for Fall are available in mid August or so. Been seeing this for years with DD1, in LPS.
That is what I was looking for as well! Of course, found the hard copy calendar later in our folder We sent our deposit and contract in yesterday. Go Choate!
We are booking our travel for move-in weekend/matriculation ceremonies. Does anyone know if parents are invited to convocation? Trying to figure out how long to stay.
Parents are NOT invited to matriculation/convocation ceremonies.
In the AM of drop-off day, you will take your kiddo over to the Paul Mellon Arts Center to register and then over to the dorm to help him/her move in. Then, one of the seniors (look for the yellow shirts) will escort your student to get their laptop set up and their picture ID taken. You can have lunch together and go to the school bookstore to pick up and pay for their books (ouch$$), but your part will be done around 4-5 PM when you will hug your child farewell (no tears now!) and head over to the Sally Hart Lodge to end the evening among other parents of all forms enjoying libations and hors d’oeuvres hosted by the Parent Advisory Council. (Do introduce yourself to Libby Peard, who heads the PAC.) You will leave campus directly from this parent event. Your child will be enjoying dinner in the dining hall among his/her new schoolmates and will then get dressed and head over to the chapel for the matriculation ceremony, but no parents will be on campus by then.
