Everything you need to know about the President’s Scholar Program

Our daughter was accepted yesterday. 4.0 GPA (uw) from top tier out of state high school, 35 ACT, AP Honors scholar, varsity sports, strong EC’s, yet no merit offers from SMU. When do the President’s Scholar consideration letters go out? Another girl at her high school with significantly lower grades, scores, and EC’s received her acceptance yesterday with a scholarship included. Quite honestly, we can only consider SMU with merit money included.

Do all merit notifications go out with acceptance letters, or is there still hope?

@charliemom1234 - There are still many more scholarships that get released in “waves”, and then concluding with the huge ones, the Presidential and Hunt’s.

Hey guys!

So the the deal with Prez Scholarship is this: it’s assessed a little differently than other merit aid (however they do tend to correlate) so you aren’t necessarily out of the running by any means. Moreover there’s always departmental/college scholarships that are awarded later on.

That said, the first wave of letters for PS will go out at the end of the month. Good luck to all and feel free to pm me with questions!

John

@johnangle - How did you find out that the first wave has already gone out?

If the first wave of letters for PS went out the end of last month as previously mentioned…does anyone know of someone who has received one?

I don’t think that was true, because it clearly says on the SMU website that they begin sending notifications in February. Also, the regular admission people haven’t gotten a chance to be evaluated so it wouldn’t be fair.

The first round of Pres Scholar notifications have gone out. More will still be invited, however, from EA and regular decision.

So, if I have already received my admission and received the Founder’s Scholarship, does that automatically indicate that I am not a contender for the President’s Scholarship?

Letters have not yet been sent out for Regular Decision applicants, so hold tight! Also, if you applied EA and have not received notification, some EAs will be reconsidered with the Regular Decision applicants. Good luck!

Has anyone interviewed for the Dedman Scholars program?

It seems kind of unlikely that any presidential scholars notifications have been sent considering absolutely nobody has posted with one. Do you know how many were notified?

I agree, I don’t think they have been sent out yet. It looks like last year both the Presidential and Hunt notifications went out exactly 1 month before the interview dates (which is the same for both, March 23rd) so I think we can expect to get them next week.

My daughter is interviewing for Presidents Scholarship next month- she is wondering if the questions regarding novels are based on the plot of the novel or how they relate to her?

@CoolMomof5 - When was your daughter notified about this interview?

for those of you wondering: received PS interview invitation today in the mail in FL with no prior email contact. do not be concerned if you live further from dallas and have yet to receive an invite as it might still be in the mail.

@coolmomof5- It really depends on who is interviewing your daughter. The purpose of the President’s Scholar interview is not for you to regurgitate your accomplishments or to give plot summaries of the books you put. They want to see how you can draw connections and think on your toes. Good luck!

quick question: what should I bring to wear for interview/reception/dinner? business skirt suit too dressy?

absolutely fantastic program! I can’t say enough good things about the current president’s scholars, the professors, and the administration.

Glad you enjoyed your visit, unodosytracy! I enjoyed meeting y’all the other day… Good luck!

Thanks! I got the call from Martha yesterday that I was selected as a PS! Now I just have to make the big decision!
