just a note: I will be attending SMU next year as a PS! so excited about the program and SMU!

Hi guys! im applying to smu for the 2013 year, and I was wondering if anyone who got the ps could post the stats!! I really want to get Ps but im worried my stats arent good enough :(

you’ll see dtakeda’s stats at the beginning of this thread but I received the scholarship with a 1530 SAT, 34 ACT, 4.0 UW GPA, Valedictorian, Top Leadership and State Awards in several ECs, and participation and the top award at an extremely competitive leadership program. While the stats of PSs are extremely strong across the board, they vary depending on other aspects of their application.

Can you still possibly be a finalist if you apply by the jan 15 deadline?? My friend wants to know!

Are there additional essays to write for PS?

Got in Friday the 13
Is it possible for me to get it or no chance.
No scholarships though ): but lucky to be accepted. They said that they really loved the presidents volunteer service award that I received for 3 years.

My daughter got accepted in SMU and got the Founders Scholarship ( 15k)… when would she find out if she is invited to be a pres scholar???

Vegasgirl1- I think they notify in Feb, interview in March and announce winners in early April. My son also has been accepted and has really good numbers so we are hopeful to be considered for this one as well. This is one of the “biggies”

The best info I could gather is that the PS interviews are the Saturday around March 20-24 each year. This year (2014) they should be March 22. The invitations to interview are sent out in the mail exactly one month before (Saturday, February 22), and arrive a few days later, depending on how close the student lives to Dallas. There is no email notification. The mail consists of a questionnaire and arrangements for the student to stay in a hotel or a dorm the night before the interview. The questionnaire is used for the interview (if you say you read a book, you better be able to talk about it, etc). 60 students are invited to interview, 20-25 students are offered the PS. If a few kids don’t accept the invitation to interview, and a few more decide not to attend SMU, the odds quickly become 1 in 2 that an interviewee will be awarded a scholarship. The scholarships are provided by private entities, but the selection of interviewees and recipients is performed by faculty. The scholarships are full tuition, but not full ride, so room and board are not included, but these can be paid for through other programs if the student will be active in the dorms or in school activities, and the student must live in the dorms. Also, if a student has received other scholarships, they don’t stack: My son was awarded 2 scholarships worth $27,500 upon acceptance, and he just won a Dedman Scholarship worth another $10,000, so even if he is offered a Pres Scholarship, it would only be worth about $2,500-$5,000, but would afford him even more opportunities such as studying overseas gratis. All this information is gleaned from other sites and anecdotally, so it could be a bit dodgy, except how many students are interviewed and awarded, which comes from SMU’s website.

@FmMaj9 You did a good job of summing things up. The PS scholarship does turn out to be full ride, though, in practice. All of the kids have been granted full room and board as long as they continue living on campus and participating in campus activities. If the student chooses to go to an apartment or into Greek housing, they lose both the dorm AND food parts of the scholarship. (However, there is some talk that PS students who hold Greek office may be able to carry their room portion to Greek housing in the future.) The students also have a check-in appointment where they mention their campus involvement. It doesn’t seem to need to be extensive, just something.
As far as stacking scholarships, there is no need to stack the SMU scholarships as we have not paid one penny to SMU since the PS covers everything. My daughter does receive, however, a check from the bursar’s office for the outside scholarships that she received. So, she gets cash from those to use for books, travel, and outside spending money since SMU is paying for all of her other expenses. We can not speak highly enough of the PS program. The scholarship weekend was as stress free and non competitive as possible under the circumstances, the PS office has been responsive to every need and question, and the PS students are top notch kids with whom to associate.

I have my interview for the Presidential Scholarship this Friday! Any tips or bits of advice?
