exactly how good of a school is university of chicago??

It is a great school with many top ranked departements in the entire nation including economics, classics anthropology, english mathematics, physics. The list goes on and on. Top notch faculty with numerous nobel prizes. Serious students who want to learn for learnings sake. Really can compete with any school in the nation including Harvard, Princeton etc. Usually compared to schools like Columbia, Cornell, Duke, NW, Brown,Swarthmore. Academics can't be beat. Be prepared to study. The students there are proud of the tag, "Where fun goes to die" because they know they are getting a great education and having some fun at the same time.

Academics can't be beat. Be prepared to study.

That's exactly right -- from an academic perspective, U of C can hold its own with the very best in the world.

an intense school.

there're two types of schools

one, academically oriented: U of Chicago, HYP, Columbia, MIT, CalTech, UC Berkeley......

two, socially/caeer oriented (awe3some academics as well): penn, dartmouth, Northwestern, U of Virginia.....................

and other schoosl in between.................

LOL @ the poster including Virginia up there with Northwestern, Penn, Dartmout, HYP, MIT, Columbia, Chicago, CIT, and Berkeley.

From what I hear, it seems the Uni of Chicago is an excellent school with great academics for undergraduates.

LOL at a2wolvwa for being an IDIOT

Ditto to what uvajoe said.

IDIOT?

Quit hyping up your universities with better ones. UVA is a great school, but when you include it with a list of HYP, and you leave a TON of schools of UVA's quality out, you need to be questioned.

Haha, yes. Especially when Untilted included Penn and Dartmouth but not Duke. If UVa is mentioned, then you have to mention Michigan & Wisconsin & UNC. :D

U Chicago is an awesome school, and it offers very small classes and lots of research opportunities. Many of Chicago's programs are among the best in the nation (anthropology, economics, physics, math, English, etc. are examples).

You're blind if you only look at a school from an academic perspective. UChicago is a horrible school.... "where fun goes to die"

'nuff said.

^^^ LOL!!! ^^^

That's a great post!

I eliminate schools if they don't have a Division I football team, and a Division I basketball team.

I'm sorry i'm too sports-oriented to go to an academic school.

Hogwash. The school had lots going on when I visited, and there's plenty to do if you look. The people I talked to loved it. You get out what you put into it. Maybe Chicago got that reputation because their social scene doesn't revolve around parties, sports, and drinking? Anyway, Chicago's location is a big draw for lots of people. Northwestern isn't that far away if you really need to get away.

U Chicago > UVa :)

It's an amazing school that many people would not enjoy, and the same is true of all the big name schools. Learn about the school. Exacly how good is it? What possible answer would satisfy you. People in the know know that it is an academically chalenging school for the headier, smarter types. Many people would be unhappy going to such a challenging school that focuses on academics, with rather perculiar people who enjoy doing things that other people would consider boring, but is the same different at MIT? St. Johns? Swarthmore? It has its unique personality, which allows some students to love college, but some people would hate it.

A2Wolves..... me too, I am pretty much only looking at schools with a DI football and basektball program. It's basically a must have

Then why are you all over Pennsylvania's nuts?

A2.... Penn has D1 football and basketball....

EXACTLY how good?

let's see...

really, really, really good... but

a little just below really, really, really, really good

(btw, all Ivy football competes in Div I-AA)

"EXACTLY how good?

let's see...

really, really, really good... but

a little just below really, really, really, really good"

Don't you mean really, really, really prestigious, but a little below really, really, really, really prestigious? When you get to the highest echelons of higher education, doesn't it get a little absurd to say there's a measurable difference of quality among schools? Isn't the measure of that elusive thing we call "quality" impossible?

On the undergraduate level, it is a prestige issue. On the graduate level, however, U Chicago blows most schools out of the water- in prestige and quality.
