Exactly HOW SKEWED is everyone's perception of college because of CC?

You know how it is. Everyone notices the 2400, 4.5, 10-AP-class students on this board. And I think that's affecting everyone's judgment on their chances. So, how warped is our perception of the strength of the applicant pool by being active members of the CC boards?

I'm just happy I found this AFTER I applied...that woulda been a stressful period if I knew people like this existed LOL

I would say it's pretty warped which is why I chose to join CC after I heard from all my colleges so I wouldn't feel intimidated or worried about my chances, though I believe that the biggest problem with CC critiques of those asking for their chances is that people tend to focus on the applicant's faults rather than their achievements which when put in the right light can make many applicants appear very strong and appealing. Also, I often see the definition of average way off base, such as when there's a student who's got a 3.7 and took three or four AP's. I don't know about you, but in our school this would definitely be an above average student. So I think CCers fail to really gauge the quality of an applicant because it appears that the only way they can describe an applicant is exceptional, average, or poor with no grey area to be discussed.

I have a thread on the top 11 ways to know someone's from CC. I think that list sums it up nicely.

well CC has all these smart people who worry about getting into college with a 3.9 uw and a 2200 sat..

ooo post a link to that thread lol

it's in the CC cafe...it's one of the "important threads"

The problem is that so many 3.9/2200 get the shock of their lives in April when top schools reject them. CC is the first reality check for many who are tops in their small town and think that will get them into harvard.

I think CC can both give you a good grip on reality and make you lose any grip you had at all. It prepares you for the fact that yes, there are way better applicants than yourself, but it also assures you sometimes that you do not need to be perfect or go to Harvard to be successful or happy in life.

"I'm just happy I found this AFTER I applied...that woulda been a stressful period if I knew people like this existed"

werd to that...im in the same boat..CC is just a place to corrupt young minds into partying and sex during my work hours

I think CC is often a little too harsh. I know plenty of people who--according to CC--would not get into the colleges they got into. It is not a fluke either, these are kids who got into multiple schools who if they were to post on a what-are-my-chances thread would have been told to look lower.

Yup, CC's done that....

I was totally unaware of all of this insane competition before joining CC.

I'm scared ****less, but that won't stop me from doing my best.

CC is intimidating lol.

Whenever I get nervous that my stats aren't good enough, I just remember that the people on CC compromise less than 1% of college applicants and that makes me feel better. Seriously...hardly anyone I know from any school has a 2300+ SAT and a near perfect GPA, but on CC thats the norm and lower than that is below average. Yeah right.

^yeah seeing that makes me feel better too

Let's put it this way: I'm an Honors Student, Class President, and Editor-in-Chief. And I'm pretty sure I'd be rejected from Clown College.

I get scared sometimes because I go to the Yale EA Decisions thread etc., and see amazing applicants get turned down.

There is a reason why Harvard only admitted about 1/2 of their perfect score SAT applicants. There is more to life and success than a GPA and SAT.

actually... this board has given me more positive feedback on applying to ivies than kids at my school... weird, huh?
