EXCELLENT ECs, WEAK class 11th GRADES, HELP! HELP!

Hey Everyone.
This is my first post on CC.
(Although i have been scavenging on this community's informations for the past year. :p)

Well, I'll get straight to the point.
I was a good student, YES! a GOOD one.
But the school in which I studied 11th grade in is one of the most competitive schools in the state [Rank 3 in STATE].

The problem here is that my school is a lot dedicated towards the Indian Education System and thus only prepares its students Academically.
My school awards the least marks to the students compared to any other school in the City.

I failed in Physics and Maths in the first semester.
No WONDER! In a batch of 240, Only 3 guys were able to pass in all the subjects! WEIRD isn't it?

So, The red markings are going to be reflected in my school transcripts! :(

Do I really need to send them? If by chance my school awards good grades in the next semester, Will that help?
I have a lot of GOOD ECs.
Will the Red marks going to affect my chances?

I am going to apply for computer science.

and Yes I am the topper of Information Practices [Computer Science] in my batch.
100/100. Awesome! Isn't it?

My IP teacher will nearly loves me! So he's going to write an awesome letter of rec. for me.

[One More thing]
There is no counselor in my school! What should I do about that?
Can I ask a school teacher to become one?

SUMMING UP-
1) Weak class 11th Pecentile of PCM. 100/100 in IP. Will it affect my chances?
2) No counselor? What to do about that? Can I ask a school teacher to become one?

Hi! What I would do is ask your school to include your class’ mean marks in the transcript, so that the college can see what the average marks of the class is and judge you in accordance. Yeah, you should be able to ask a teacher you know well or the school principal to act as counselor :)

Okay, I kinda had the same problem. I mean i didn’t fail, i got like an 70% aggregate.
If u really are serious about pursuing your studies abroad, you could always ask your parents to talk to the principal. Tell her, about your situation and how the 11th marks are important to you. Usually CBSE based school are really strict in 11th and 12th, in order to prepare you for boards.
If yor principal doesn’t agree to your parents plea, ask her to at least mention to class average and your rank in your transcripts. Believing me, that red mark in your transcript is gonna be a ***** to you during your applications.

If you are a junior atm, focus more on your EC’s. Like, literally sign up for all clubs and events you can possibly get into. Also, If possible try taking a 6th subjecct like P.E or something, its redundant but will make your college application more pretty and it will also alleviate the pressure off your 11th grade marks.
Good luck, I hope the best for you :)

Talk to the principle about what?

I don’t mean to sound rude, but that’s some of the worst advice I’ve ever heard. OP, please get involved in clubs/activities that you are really interested in and not just for the sake of padding your CV. Admission officers see right through tactics like these it doesn’t go down well with them. Remember, depth > breadth. A lesser number of ECs that show passion and commitment is always better than a horde of meaningless activities done just for the sake of applications.

You failed in Physics and Maths ? Uh, that is a pretty serious disadvantage. Colleges in the states tend to pay heed to HS grades. But but, I think with awesome ECs, you may just manage to sneak in.
And with your grades, you should tell your guidance counselor to explain why you failed those 2 subjects, that should help. If you don’t have a counselor, your school principal can act as one.
On that note, what ECs do you have exactly ?

And I agree to whatever idream17 there says, don’t join clubs which don’t interest you.

I mean hey, I am just telling what i have inferred from my experience. The stuff I am talking about worked for me just fine. But w/e

@Mrinal…How should I strengthen my chances at berkeley

Dont get me wrong--------if you are from top 3 schools of Bihar, you should be either from St Michel’s,Dps Patna/gaya,DAV BSEB and each of these school have some students with grades above 85% or 90%…I may also be wrong

Hey!

Well, My School principal is the most arrogant man on this planet. So, there is no way he’s going to help me. :frowning:
However, I can still convince him to add the mean class marks to the transcript as i have done a lot of work for the school. :)

Well regarding the ECs.
To name a few-

 1. I self-taught computer programming at the age of 13 and I have been designing websites and stuff ever since.
 2. Have interned in a lot of companies as their computer related adviser and programmer.
 3. Worked as a full time computer developer for one of Asia’s largest student organisation.
 4. Founder and President of a student organisation working in the field of Education reforms and has members in over 16 countries
 5. Going to organize an Inter-school fest next year. It will be BIG.
 6. Had multiple media splashes from time to time.
 7. Have carried out multiple projects with some great organisations.
 8. Made a social networking website when i was 15 [that’s a big thing in India].
 9. Founder and CEO of an awesome company which aims at reducing human effort in finding places to study. [STILL IN DEVELOPMENT]
 10. Have attended a few conferences.
 11. ASIAN ambassador of a Internationally acclaimed student organisation.

and STUFF AND STUFF. :)

collstu,

Brother,
DPS is not one of the best school’s of Bihar. Neither is DAV BSEB.

My Points-

 1. DPS awards 10 CGPA to nearly everyone.
 2. DAV admits 1500 students in one class.

No comments about St. Micheals. They are awesome. :)

Mrinal,
Yeah! I do What I love and Have a real passion about. :)

NosferatuBiEn,
I’m not being rude.
Why fake something,
If they don’t like me. I don’t care.
But to do something I don’t love. No, That is not good. :)

I like your attitude, bro. I don’t think grades matter that much, as long as its not international system. And besides, the colleges maintain a W graph i.e 9th(low), 11th (low) so you don’t have to worry. Love your EC’s, looks like you’re a strong contender. Where all are u applying ??

Well, my dream school is Stanford. I think it fits me.
What about you?

I also have the same problem… Will it work if I just don’t send them my 11th class report card…?? (I got 56% but that’s because I was taking coaching to prepare for JEE)

And one more thing… I want to send my pre-board marks (which are going to happen in December) as mid-year report…!! Will they doubt that why the school didn’t took any examination since too long??

I am really confused… Help me guys…!!

heyy, I have the same problem i have good grades in 10th and 12th. I passed out this year.
My 11th grades suck, primarily because of JEE prep.

I am thinking of not including class 11 on my transcript…(just thinking as of now).
Ill try and avoid it at all costs.

Someone please tell me that its not important to send 11th grades…

Your Application will be incomplete without the 11th grades. An Incomplete application will not even get into the reading bin. Instead what you can do is explain the bad grades if you have a good reason and ‘dazzle’ with the essay that talks about you overcoming that phase in life by sheer hard work and determination. Also could reflect your ‘coming of age’, being a responsible adult…

@anialways What you just said…Can it be mentioned on the Transcript itself as a comparative study…???

If all the students with your subject groups have done equally bad, then that will reflect on the Transcript itself in terms of class rank, or percentile, or average grade received by the class. That would show you in context of your classmates. That in my opinion, speaks the real story.

thnx…you know how bad class 11 is india…I was fourth after performing so poorly…

@anialways thanx again…

Codeguy, please check your email!

mail? there is nothing new there
