1- What exactly counts as "excessive?"
2- If one does have excessive medical expenses and the financial aid office takes this into consideration, how much extra money could they get?

The Income Protection Allowance is part of the EFC formula. Within that IPA, there is a %'age allocated to unreimbursed medical expenses. Anything over this amount can be considered for a special circumstances adjustment. That doesn’t mean it will, but it can. You would have to ask the school how they want you to request the review … each school is different. All will want very detailed receipts/explanation.

You may not actually get any more money even if you are given consideration for the expenses. It depends on your family’s financial situation. The one thing I know for certain is this … if you have a 0 EFC, it won’t make any difference (you can’t get a lower EFC than 0). I suspect that if you have an EFC that is a LOT higher than Cost of Attendance, it may well make no difference at all. In between, there are shades of gray.

Live and Learn…

Isn’t your EFC already 0? If so, having medical expenses won’t help.
