Hello! I was just wondering if it would be at all beneficial to list a short exchange program I’m going to take part in as one of my extracurriculars on college apps? I will be hosting a Romanian exchange student for about a week, taking them on trips, taking them to school with me, etc, and then I will be going to Romania for about a week later on to do the same. Thanks!
Not beneficial unless there was a selection involved. Maybe a source for an essay.
My daughter included a summer study abroad experience on her common app ECs - though it was lower on the list (somewhere between 8 and 10, but I don’t remember her order or what she had on there). Her experience was more rigorous than most exchange programs our school offers since it involved daily classwork along with the cultural activities and experiences. But I think any experience like that is worth including since it requires a degree of independence, cultural awareness and adaptability that many American teens lack. I think it is just important to keep it balanced on the list with those activities you invest most of your time in.
I would definitely add it as an EC! If you don’t have that many, it can stand on its own, If you have quite a few, then it could be combined with other “international” or “language” type activities.
