Executive MBA vs. normal MBA

What is the difference between these two programs, assuming they are coming from the same schools? Is one worth more on the job market?

Executive MBAs are for more experienced middle-upper middle people who are already or who wish to be in management. They are usually part-time, night time or weekend studies. These people are not really looking to change careers, perhaps to bump up a notch or two in their present field. Lots want this opportunity for networking with similarly experienced professionals.

MBA programs (usually 2 years full-time, 3-4 years part-time) are generally longer than EMBA programs (typically 12-18 months part time). EMBA programs cost about twice, require much more experience (EMBA: middle to upper management, about 10-15 years of experience at least vs. MBA: 2-3 years of experience, just past entry level), and put much less emphasis on factors like undergraduate GPA and GMAT (often waiving GMAT applications).

EMBA programs are generally designed to take a middle manager to upper management, whereas an MBA program is geared towards starting a management career. As a result, MBA programs tend to have stronger career services departments and placement than EMBA programs (EMBA students are usually already employed). If you’re looking for a position in banking or consulting, they’ll hire from MBA programs and not EMBA programs.

Thanks for the descriptions, very helpful!

Are there any top business schools that offer part-time MBA (not EMBA) programs?

Disregard my question. Here’s the answer.

http://grad-schools.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-graduate-schools/top-business-schools/part-time-rankings

Is there ever a situation where a person hours through both programs at different points in his our her career?

You mean that someone would get an MBA than an EMBA? No, you wouldn’t do that. If you want to go back to school after an MBA, you’d specialize with an MS in a specific area. But that usually don’t add much value over an MBA.

Oh okay, thanks!
