See IRS Publication 17: [Publication 17 (2009), Your Federal Income Tax](http://www.irs.gov/publications/p17/index.html)

Table 1-2.2009 Filing Requirements for Dependents
If your parents claim you as a dependent, you must file a tax return if: (1) you have earned income greater than $5700, or (2) your unearned income (interest, dividends, capital gains) is greater than $950. Generally speaking, if you don’t need to file a return, then you are exempt from paying federal and state taxes. If you meet the above criteria, fill out the 2010 w-4 exempt form. (You could also fill out a regular w-4, have taxes taken out, then file for a refund next year.)
