Hello, im figuring out some fafsa info right now and would like some help!

My parents are planning to claim me for their taxes (as usual) and i was wondering, does "claiming" a child mean that i am technically not filing taxes?

Also.. since i am not filing my own taxes, do i still need to fill in my income on question number 38 on the FAFSA form??

Question 38: Students income earned from working.

or.. do i get to put in "0" as the studets income earned, since i am not filing taxes??

very confused.. any helpful info would be much appreciated!!

You put the amount you actually earned from working in 2010 on that line…it is not asking you if you filed or not and being a dependent for tax purposes doesn’t matter either. If you earned enough that you must file taxes (see the irs site to determine that), then you put “will file” in the student tax status instead of “will not file”.

You have to report your income from any source on FAFSA in question 35 and then income earned from work in question 38. Question 38 is used to calculate allowances for money earned from working. It does not matter whether your parents claim you as a dependent or not. If you have income it is reported on FAFSA.

If your income is over the tax filing threshold ($5700 if it is only earned income, lower if you have unearned income) you also have to file a tax return and pay taxes. Your parents claiming you as a dependent does not mean you do not have to file taxes. It just means they are claiming a tax exemption for you as a dependent. Even if you earned under the threshold, if you had a job and had taxes deducted, you should file a return in order to get any overpaid taxes refunded.
