I read a thread a while ago about how Exeter rates applicants. It says it rates them "A1 through A4" and that "only A1 applicants were offered financial aid." So, what do you guys think an A1 applicant would be? I'd guess pretty much straight A's with a 90% SSAT score with all sections in above 80%, with some really incredible extracurriculars. What is your opinion?

^Sorry that I can’t offer up much to this discussion, but anyways, that’d be awesome if your description was right, because that’s basically us :D.

I doubt it’s that formulaic.

@neato,
I was very surprised when I read this too. I didn’t think it was that way. But I really hope it’s not that formulaic.

I heard that they split all the applicants into 3 or 4 different sections depending on their financial aid needs…
Then they take the top applicants from the sections… :)

The A1-A4 thing is true because I read it in their school newspaper a while back.

The AOs meet the applicant. There’s a lot of fluff in applications, but Exeter’s application is pretty simple, so the interview, reco’s and test scores probably dominate. Unless your current school is well known to Exeter, why should they take the grades too seriously as long as they’re A’s with a few B’s? A grade from a CTY class probably means more.

What I meant was that how they assign ratings is likely not that formulaic. I’m sure they rate the apps. I imagine all schools do that to a certain extent, if only for logistical purposes.

@kraodrawoh,
I was surprised how simple Exeter’s application is. Two fairly short straightforward essays and that’s it! Now St. Paul’s application is another story…

SPS’s is brutal. Even the parents’ section is challenging. I think they’re trying to discourage frivolous applications.
