Hi cglen,

I was a new lower last fall, I'll try to recall what happened in the first few days as best I can.

Basically, the first day is unstructured. There are windows of time for you to do things, but no concrete schedule. I think sports try outs are the first day or so, be prepared if you are going to try out for a sport! You'll go to some meetings, but these are generally useless. There'll be a swim test also, not hard at all, just swim to one end of the pool and back. The first day you'll be in the science center a lot because that's where school registration is, where room key pickups are, registrations for things like a debit card and stuff along these lines.

At the end of the day there'll be a dorm meeting. It's really boring usually, unless your dorm head is really cool. You do get to meet all of the new people in the dorm and all of the proctors.

Actually, I lied when I said sports try outs are the first day, they are the second day for new students and first day for returning students. (New students get to school one day before returning students). The second day is quite something. When all the returning students arrive, the atmosphere changes, almost completely. You'll feel slightly attached to the new students because you've been together for a day and the returning students seem invasive. At least, that's how I felt and how the other new students in my dorm felt. Some of them will be intimidating, others will be apathetic but this is because they are really tired because they just did a lot of traveling. In my dorm, we played a lot of frisbee the second day, it was quite fun. Then there will be a all school cook out and basically what happens is all the new kids hang out together and all the returning kids hang out together and say hi every once in a while. Oh and sometime between the two days there will be an ice cream party for new students.

A lot happens in the first few days. After the first week, it'll feel like a month has passed. ENJOY THIS FEELING WHILE IT LASTS, THE REST OF THE YEAR IS ALMOST ALL WORK AND FLIES BY QUICKLY.

The dorm meeting on the second day is awesome. Here the new kids and returning kids will introduce each other and start to interact, then the dorm head will give another rant and finally everyone gets to say something about themselves. Or at least, that's what we did.

You'll feel a strong sense of community in the dorm, savor it. The feeling won't last too long.

I hope that helps and gets you excited. The first week or so feels like camp, it's awesome.

thanks, that was exactly what i was looking for!

Yay! Now I'm excited!!...just for that week. Hah, just kidding...or am I?
