Exeter Q&A

Haha, yeah I kind of was thinking that Amen would probably most suit me because I’ve visited the dorm and the vibe was really nice. But I’m open to most dorms also.

@SquashPlayer123 If you get placed into high math course (like 300 level I think), the department may place you into accelerated physics course, which is 400 level. It covers a bit of advanced physics materials (510-520-530) and all the basics covered in the intro physics course. Most students who take accelerated physics also take AP physics exam at the end of the year.

@B1ackUnicorn tryouts happen on the day we come back to school and last for a few days. The first few days of school are orientation / short classes day, so tryouts do actually take place before we start taking actual classes.

@fesgvgv

All the courses at Exeter are one term long, but sometimes you have to take one-year sequence (e.g. science courses such as introduction to physics 310-320-330 sequence).
CSC 405 is one-term long, but you are recommended to take CSC 505 and CSC 590 if you want to take AP exam at the end of the year.
CSC 405 does not require prior knowledge, as it is an introduction to Java language. However, it may be hard to keep up with the pace of the course. CSC 205 and 208 are the courses that most students will take if they are not interested in computer science. Those are much easier than CSC 405. CSC 208 is an introduction to HTML/CSS/JS and you get to make interactive websites. CSC 205 is half coding, half public policies course.

CSC 590 requires some proficiency in computer science as you study things like robotics, Artificial intelligence, and more. Most students who take CSC 590 would be the ones who took CSC 405/505/506 beforehand or who have prior coding experience.

Workload depends on your skill levels. With prior experience, homework does not take long at all. However, as it gets near the finals or any project deadlines, you might need to commit some time to finish up your work.

Usuaully, students you are into STEM would take religion/history course or whatever is the hardest for them in their prep fall, as you only get pass/fail on your transcript.

If you think you will be able to get a better grade in comp sci, take history. Or else, you can take comp sci. It is also a good idea to consider studying a year abroad upper year, as you get much better grades. Also, you get to be more proficient in languages and experience different culture.

Usually, people would not finish their history credits prep year as there are a lot of good courses that you can take in your senior year once you finish your US history credits.

You can always change your course selections once you get to Exeter. They will let to change your classes if you think they are too hard for you or too easy for you.

@B1ackUnicorn This year Dunbar had around 70 boarders with 7 affiliated day students. It’s the largest dorm on campus.

hi,
i’m a full fin aid student – when can i expect to receive/be notified of specifics such as my laptop/books stipends? and how will they notify me/how does the fin-aid process work?

Thank you @highschoolgall ! I just have one more question regarding math placement – The math department placed me in 31x although I’ve finished BC calc in my current school. Would I be able to transition right to Multivariable Calc/Linear Algebra after taking 31x?
Is 31x the highest course you can take as a prep or should I try to move up to a higher level once I get to Exeter?

@gogh4it we received laptop stipend info near the end of June. Info about the book stipend comes in August. All the info is sent to parents via email.

I just logged onto LionLinks and discovered that my schedule has already been assigned. I am currently enrolled in PE, but I am planning to do V/JV sports. Although they will probably change it, I just wanted to make sure that if you do a sport, you don’t need to take PE, right?

@ImWaisian that is correct - sports replace PE

@fesgvgv Unless you have taken AP AB/BC Calc exam already, they will place you in 31x if you are an incoming prep or a new lower. It is the hardest transition course - covers precalc to intro calc. It’s very fast-paced, and although it may sound easy, a lot of people drop to easier classes in the middle of the term. The school puts the most mathematically talented kids in that class - this year, two preps from that class won USAJMO. The sequence that you will be following once you complete 31x - 40x - 41x, is 421-511-521, which is an accelerated calculus sequence.

I was placed into 23X. Any thoughts on what I should do to prepare before the term starts?

@highschoolgall Oh wow. I really do need to start practicing math to face future USAJMO winners at the oval table… @ImWaisian You could do some topics on Khan Academy - don’t forget to watch the videos, they are extremely good for understanding what’s going on. Also, try looking at math tournament problems - they tend to be more interesting than memorizing formulas.

These are my courses for the 2019-2020 school year. I do plan to take soccer and crew in place of fall term and spring term PE. Are any of these known for being particularly hard/difficult and what measures should I take to prepare over the summer?

Also, are T-Shirts in the dress code? I’ve seen differing opinions. Anything within reason can be worn outside of classes, correct?

@CriminalMindsB interesting you are taking 3 terms of history in year 1. All my kids spread each elective subject out over their 4 years (history, religion, art etc). They found they could take upper level courses this way as some courses are only available for the upper grades. They also enjoyed the variety.
T-shirt’s without words are in dress code for girls for sure- I can’t keep up with the guys dress code. As far as what to wear out of class, there are restrictions as far as we have seen. You will see all styles worn.

Since @CriminalMindsB did it, I guess I’ll let the world see my schedule too… Here goes:

I will be doing WoPo first term, swim varsity second term and row my third term all in place of PE.

Oh no - did I make a mistake? Now I’m nervous!! So this is an uncommon course sequence to take? Should I look into changing it??

@CriminalMindsB from what I heard at Exeter, most people spread their courses so they can take courses of varying difficulties and topics.

@CriminalMindsB I wouldn’t call it a mistake, but I would recommend you try to have a variety of electives spread throughout your 4 years. Also take the elective subject in prep fall that will be most challenging for you to take advantage of the pass/ fail term.
