Does anybody know how much speaking vs writing is happening in foreign language classes? Is it mostly discussion? Also, I was thinking of doing the US history sequence as a lower - under what circumstances does the department allow that?
For some reason, I don’t have Spanish in my courses, even though I have been taking it for a while and intend to continue. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that I haven’t received a placement test yet? I don’t know. Anyways, I’m looking into changing my electives for winter and spring term, thank you guys for letting me know about it. I definitely want to stick with history for the pass/fail term though! History is my worst subject. Maybe I’ll see B1ackUnicorn in some of my classes!
@HappyCria as all classes are discussion based, foreign language seems to be heavily weighted to speaking. The classes I have sat in on over the years were all conversations and my daughter has repeatedly lamented her lack of writing skills in Russian. (In spite of taking 4 years of Russian.)
Also, I have never heard of PEA allowing US history to be taken by a lower. Not to say they wouldn’t allow it- but it is a right if passage for the upper class to suffer through it together. Curious why you would look to take it earlier?
@MaylaSunshine You can’t use your full email. For example, if your email is maylasunshine@exeter.edu, you would only use maylasunshine. The password is the same.
Tip: If you’re lazy like me, you can also only use maylasunshine as your username to get into ExeterConnect too!
This is a question for any PEA student or parent. Have you or do you know someone who has taken Chemistry 411/421/431? The course catalog makes it sound like it’s a regular AP Chem class but someone mentioned that it’s called “Death Chem”. Why is it called Death Chem? It is an impossible course for someone who has never studied chemistry?
@CriminalMindsB I wouldn’t worry about the type of electives in one year but I would look at your 4 year course sequence and see what makes sense for you. My daughter should have taken 3 history/religion courses her prep year but didn’t realize it until late spring in her prep year. At that point, she didn’t have enough slots left to take all the courses she wanted and still meet her history/religion graduation requirement. You can always take more advanced history electives in later years too if you have the availability in your schedule.
I’m a rising lower. 23X is what I started in last fall, because I had taken a year of algebra one and a year of geometry at my public school and did ok on the placement test. However, as it turned out, both of those math classes had been kind of watered down in public school, and 23X was a struggle. Fortunately, I had a wonderful teacher and learned early on to go to peer tutoring, and I finished the term with a good enough grade to continue into the 311/321/401 sequence. Some people find 23X mostly to be review, though, if they’ve had good math preparation in their previous school, so it really depends on what kind of math you’ve had before coming into it.
