Exeter Q&A

Hi all,
Revisit days are traditionally only one day, unless you are an athlete invited to spend the night in a dorm.
@ProudDramaMama it is common for day students to spend time during the day in close friends dorm rooms, even when the friend is busy with other activities. Our daughter has had close day student friends hanging out in her dorm room the entire time she has been at PEA. Of course, they have agreed to limitations etc…

Thank you so much for your response. That sounds like a great – and kind, of your daughter! – arrangement.

@vegas1 If you do spend time in a dorm, would you just leave after you wake up on the second day?

@exiestudent Thank you.

What happens when you are too sick to go to classes?

@Ravenclaw3 @fencer557 your information is very helpful.

@vegas1 Thanks for the information about Revisit Day.

@SquashPlayer123 If you’re too sick, you’d go to the Health Center and, once you get there, fill out a form. This form is basically the school’s way of accounting for you, making sure that you won’t be issued an unexcused absence. The staff at the Health Center will treat you from there. If you become sick late at night (this happened to me once), then Campus Safety officers woll drive you to the Health Center, where you can stay the night if necessary

@SquashPlayer123 if you are a boarder you head to the health center. The health center is part doctors office and part health care facility. You usually get medicine if needed and stay in a room during regularly scheduled classes. If need be you can stay overnight as well- it is staffed 24/7.

I have 2 questions. First, how far can you go off campus without permission? Second, what are some casual coffee places within that vicinity?

  1. There's a range listed in the E-book which can be found on this page https://www.exeter.edu/current-students
  2. St. Anthony's bakery is right near campus, and there's a Dunkin Doughnuts in the area

@Ravenclaw3 Thanks!

Could I wear khaki colored Chubbies in the warmer months? If not, what do you guys wear in the warmer months?

That would probably be within dress code and there’s also much individual variation between teachers on how dress code is enforced.
Dress code can be found on page 6 of the E-book.

@Ravenclaw3 Thank you

Hi,

If I am repeating my grade at Exeter, will this alter my graduation requirements/course pre-requisites at all? I’m a little nervous about trying to figure out my courses :frowning:

@gogh4it Repeating a grade will not alter your graduation requirements. They are pretty clear, and depend completely on whether you come in as a prep, lower, upper or senior. Definitely read the course book carefully! You will also want to make sure you can fulfill all of the requirements if you plan to study abroad at some point.

In terms of pre-reqs, you will take placement tests for math and foreign language, and will be placed in an appropriate class. You will take English and health (if required) with your grade. If you take an “elective” (art, music, computer science, religion, history, etc), courses may be open only to preps/lowers or uppers/seniors, or it may be open to all 4 grades. You’ll have a little choice with science, depending in part on your math background and preparation. If you’re coming in as a prep, and not competing on a JV/V team, you will need to sign up for the prep gym class.

The best part of all is that you will be assigned an advisor who can help walk you through course selection, and will make sure you complete the requirements for graduation.

On average, how much is the laundry service including dry cleaning?

@ImWaisian For this school year, the basic plan (without dry cleaning) was $680. I think adding unlimited dry cleaning would have been ~$200 more, but I could be wrong. There are MANY threads about laundry at boarding school - read through them for varying perspectives.

In an earlier thread (now closed), someone said, “God help you if you’re a musician at Exeter.” I think this was in reference to GPA and college admissions, but wondering if anyone has any insight into what this possibly means? My daughter is a musician, and is very much looking forward to participating in music at PEA.

Also, she is doing her PEA revisit on Thursday. Will she need a backpack (or anything else, for that matter)?
