exeter sophomore taking questions!

hey all! first off: CONGRATS TO EVERYONE ACCEPTED! to those that were waitlisted or rejected, don't lose faith. i was waitlisted my first time around and what i learned is not to see the letter as a seal of inadequacy, because it isn't. try again and show 'em you won't be deterred :D

so yup, taking questions!

How does dining work with there being two dining halls? Do students just go to whichever dining hall is closest to their dorm?

People go to the dining hall that they’re closest to at the time, so if they’re in their dorm and want to eat, then yes- they’ll go to the one nearest. The great thing is that one hall is on North side and one on South side, so at any point on campus you’ll be pretty close to one of them.

Hey tuesdays. Glad to see you on CC after long. Hope all is well.

I’m on waitlist. How do I get off without building a building or something? jk.

Hi on average how many hours a day do you spend on home work and projects? Also can you give me some areas in Exeter that you don’t like? Thanks.

Also are there lots of dating at Exeter?

I don’t want to be rude but hotoo I personally don’t think you’re asking the right questions. First of all, why would you want to know the negative areas of exeter. Homework, I guess alot since it’s one of the best bs in the country of course its all relative depending on what do you think is alot. And finally, Im sure there is dating but if you are only focused on it I think there are alot other boarding school tha’ll fit you. Again, I dont want to sound rude but that’s my opinion.

I think they are perfectly relevant questions regarding hootoo might spend his/her next few years at exeter.

I thinkI can answer one of your questions though as I have friends who attend exeter: dating exists like at every high school. activities and social events do EXIST at exeter but again academics is main focus

No rude at all. Regarding the negatives, I would want to get prepared now rather than to find them later.

I guess tuesdays just did a head fake,he might mean the next Tuesday. Ciao

sei o parlei italiano haha just wondering

@pulsar Thanks Pulsar, you too! My advice is to email the adcoms whenever you win an award/achieve something notable so that they can add it to your profile. What I also did was send them this HUGE letter basically gushing about how I loved Exeter. (Haha I’m actually not sure if I’d advise doing this, 'cause looking back, I probably seemed crazy/desperate to the adcoms.) But a simple letter of interest wouldn’t hurt, I think. Especially if you tell them Exeter’s your top choice. Good luck!

@hootoo Hi hootoo, I’m unsure what a head fake is, but just because I can’t reply right away doesn’t mean I’ll reply ‘next Tuesday’. Also, I’m a she

For workload, it’ll vary from 1 hour some days to 4 hours other days. So far the latest I’ve stayed up until is 2 am, but this was only because I procrastinated earlier. I can’t speak for others, but my workload has been pretty manageable overall. The thing is that I’ve never actually had to work for a continuous 4 hours even when I had that much homework, because I’d section it all out and work in the morning or during frees.

Things I don’t like…well, the food does get old after a while. I’ve also realized it can get hella cold here, like negative F, and…it was an unpleasant surprise, haha. I was a little naive and didn’t think it’d get that cold.

Ahh dating! No worries, the dating scene is existent and thriving, haha. I wouldn’t say there’s LOTS of dating (although that’s relative) but if you’re looking for relationships you can definitely find one. We are a high school, after all.

Indeed, I agree with anhoverhopefully. they are relevant specially if you’re applying or accepted already, so I apologize hootoo :)

1) Is the student government active at Exeter? Big presence on campus, or is it more behind the scenes?

2) What’s the climate like for LGBT students and is there a lot of support for GSA?

3) Do requirements outside of academics - such as art, phys ed, etc. - ever bog your schedule down? Can you possible show us an example of your schedule? The one of Exeter’s website is really confusing.

4) I’ve heard a lot about Andover’s activities/social life and academics, but relatively little on this forum and elsewhere about Exeter’s social life (though I’ve got to say, the course guide/pdf is easier to navigate for Exeter lol). Anything you can tell me about that? Or even just point me in the right direction?

5) Is theatre a big thing there? How about acapella?

6) Do you guys have class rankings and can we see where they’re posted? I want to know if top students get straight 11s and/or if the highest grade for most students is like a 9.

7) How many APs do students take on average? How many satisfy diploma requirements? Such as taking a world history course that covers AP material, AP English Lit or Comp as part of your 4 years of English, AP Calc, etc.

8) How big is MUN, how popular, and how competitive?

9) What are the most popular Varsity sports students attend? Or is sports not as big a part of the social scene? If not - what is? Theatre? Concerts? Student productions such as talent shows, fashion shows, charity auctions, etc.?

10) Is the International Club filled more with a) Asian students or b) European students?

Thanks for answering questions!! It didn’t seem like any Exeter students were active on some of the older threads :(

thanks for answering all of our questions Tuesdays, now I have several for you.
1.) What are the different girls dorms for preps?
2.) What have been some of your most favorite classes and why.
3.) Would it be realistic to take a CtY-online Arabic or Chinese course during the school year? I just want to study a third language and I find this might be the easiest way.
4.) What do you recommend for girls to wear to the revisit day?
5.) Lastly, what are items you didn’t bring with you at first that you realized you should have? Any good ideas for little cool things to pack?

Thanks tuesdays, glad to see everything is working out for you!

hey so i was just wondering what it was like to have a mix of day and boarders do the boarders miss out on a lot of like bonding stuff in the dorms? do a lot of people leave campus w/ the day students do the day students drive to/from school?

bump… 10CHAR

Hey guys I’ll be joining Exeter as an upper this year and I’m so excited about it!
I was wondering if it’s hard for you to work on your homework with the internet being turned off at 11? When do you find time to do homework anyways? Do teachers help if you are completely stuck?
@tuesdays I think you and I are going to be part of the same class!

oh hey tuesdays! same dorm whatup… so basically tuesdays and i are actually in the same dorm and we both came in as new sophomores. yup. i’m actually going to go to her room in a bit to bombard her to check CC.

i’ll answer some questions in the meantime.

student council is definitely present, but i wouldn’t say that it’s like flashy and like ridiculously dominating. it’s present in dorm representatives, class representatives, and the like. it’s pretty active here and stuco always works really hard.

exeter is a really diverse school! there’s definitely an active gsa that meets weekly. as a straight student i can’t exactly define the lgbt climate in the same way, but i know that the community is really accepting of all types of people.

despite what people seem to think, exeter students do have social lives! if you could be more specific about that question it’d be awesome, because “social life” is kind of a hugely broad topic.

theatre’s pretty good here; there’s a student-run drama organization called DRAMAT that puts on its own plays. their shows are really good! we’ve also had a bunch of really good plays. the winter play was sweeney todd! acapella groups are pretty fantastic on campus too - there’s the exeteras (all boys’), sans hommes (all girls’), in essence (an r&b girls’ group), and the peadquacs (co-ed group). there’s also a glee club.

exeter doesn’t necessarily have just an “international club” - there are a lot of different clubs on campus that represent different nations/countries. i’m part of ASEAN (association of south east asian nations) and there are also things like taiwanese american society, chinese student organization, middle eastern society - there’s just a lot of really different, cool groups.

day studs don’t really miss out on a lot of school life aside from the experience of actually boarding, but they participate in all other aspects like eating at dining hall for dinner (sometimes). i think day studs also have their own bonding experiences or something… i’m not entirely sure. but they’re definitely not left out! and sometimes day students drive to/from school, but others have their parents drive them, i guess. students aren’t allowed to leave campus with day studs unless it’s for a weekend and their parent is driving.

it’s not really hard to do homework with the internet off at 11. most of the time you won’t really need the internet to do a lot of your work - exeter work is mostly reading and analyzing texts and preparing for harkness discussions and stuff. you learn to really prioritize your work and work out what you’ll complete before the internet turns off and stuff. students have free periods during the day, but we’re typically able to get our work done at night. i personally use free periods to get ahead! you never know when you’ll suddenly like fall asleep on your bed and wake up at 12 am, finding yourself not having done anything (if you can’t tell it’s happened to me before)

i only answered some of the questions that i for sure knew how to answer. don’t think that i ignored your other questions!! :)

Wow thanks for answering questions!!

Um I guess for social life: if you have a weekend free of academic obligations, how would you spend it? How do you think some of your peers would spend it? And how do you TYPICALLY spend a weekend, allocating time for studies, sports, extracurriculars and fun stuff. Does the entire school community get involved any particular social events? Such as,is there a large attendance for plays; does the school put on fashion shows/talent shows/variety shows/etc. that are well attended; how much school spirit and attendance is at varisity games - what sports are most popular to attend? etc.

What are the senior superlatives in the yearbook? How involved do people get with yearbook, senior pages, or getting candid photos taken?

Do you have a prom? Do you select a court if you do?

What are the positions for student council beyond President, VP, and Secretary; and do they run on one ballot (such as you get a group of three students together and run on one ticket) or is the VP the runner up Presidential candidate, and Secretary the 2rd runner up? Does each dorm and each class/grade select a separate student to represent them?

What clubs have the most membership and which are the most active on campus?
