Exeter? Ask a student

As I saw PEAteacher's thread was very successful, I decided to start one of my own.

Any question for an exeter student is welcome!

I will do my best to answer them.

Disclaimer: Same as PEAteacher's, Whatever I post is my opinion only, and is not endorsed by Exeter or any of their affiliates.

What up, I’m up to accept messages as well and willing to help out PExeterA14.
'12 at Exeter here. Dying from upper year, but still surviving, and having fun. XD

OH HEY SKIM. so am i! new sophomore at PEA, class of '13. skim and i are in the same dorm. teehee. we’re here to answer all your inquiries! slash i’ll be a revisit host :)

Perfect! People to answer my countless questions regarding Exeter! (If only I was accepted) Teehee  :frowning: Too bad

Hey!

Is the work really a lot harder at Exeter than Andover?

What’s the dress code like? [for girls]

What’s the soccer team like?

Are kids more nerdy/ stressed out at exeter than andover?

What are saturday classes like?

btw. I was accepted at Exeter, and waitlisted at Andover, but originally wanted to go to Andover for the gorilla, soccer team, Starbucks, no saturday classes, and dress code.

(i sound really shallow, im not- this is in addition to the education)

I was accepted to Exeter:D really hyped! Anyway what’s a basic day like? Are there anything you love doing during the day and at night? Just wanna no as much as possible xD

what is the quality of student life? do you have time to relax at all?

just a heads-up, we’re going to have less saturday classes next year–about 6 the whole year, as opposed to… 25?

a lot of people ask about work, and the only thing I can say is that if you manage your time well then you will be fine. Different courses/teachers give different amounts of work. The curriculum is fast-paced so if you are sick for a day or few then you will have a lot of catch-up work to do.

a day… my normal day this past winter term was

8:00 swimming
~10 assembly
10:30 classes–math/electronics
12:30 lunch
1:30 history
2:20 english
3:10 universal free
4:00 chemistry

something like that… clubs after dinner are pretty normal.

leppy-

Dress code - a commonly asked question, but girls dress code is much more relaxed than the boys.

soccer team - i dont know, but you might want to check out the athletics section of Exeter’s home page for their season record.

the nerdy/stressed out question - i dont find myself stressed out usually, only on days when i have more than one test, but im only a prep… might wanna ask skim about upper year… thats when most of the stressing goes on. nerdy is a very vague term, and mostly how andover portrays us, yes we are a more academically oriented school, but you’ll find that very few of us actually look like what most people perceive as nerds… :P

saturday classes - what seikuu said is correct (except i think its 8…?). We will have a completely reduced amount of saturday school days next year, and even so, you may or may not know that saturday is only half a day, and wednesday is as well, so combine them and you get one whole school day. technically, its still less than andover, but saturday classes are to cover for the ones we didn’t have on wednesday, mostly.

I dont know whether andover or exeter has more work as I have never gone to school at andover, but from what I gather, Exeter is harder. Don’t worry about it if you end up coming, as you’ll learn to adapt quickly and manage your things more efficiently.
Hope that helps!

(I was in your same situation last year as well, btw)

Also its nice to know that I have some fellow exonians out there to correct me or back me up… Thanks guys!

Hey guys I’m coming in as am upper repeat. Really stoked.

Sounds kind of idk moronic but…

1) how’s the food?
2) are there alot of new uppers?
3) how’s the football team, ik as a recruit theyre looking good. Do people go watch the game

Hi! I would like to know if there are people that get off the waiting list for admission to Exeter. It is common for students to be taken off and accepted? Thanks so much!

i don’t think you can really judge which is “harder” - different people find different things difficult. it’s how you adapt to those difficult things and changes that determines how “difficult” a school is to somebody.

girls’ dress code is much more relaxed than boys’ dress code; i agree. they basically require you to look decent - nothing showing that shouldn’t be showing, nothing incredibly ripped or offensive, etc. teachers have told me that only in the spring does dress code get enforced more often (short shorts, thin t-shirts, tank tops, etc).

i actually like saturday classes - the week gets divided/sectioned off into two halves and you don’t feel as pressured. wednesdays and saturdays are half days to give way for athletic competitions, and in a way, it’s nice to half your week up! you get used to the idea of saturday classes, but yes, as someone mentioned, the amount of saturday classes has been cut down, but not completely.

food isn’t terrible, seriously! dining hall has a lot of stuff - and if you went to summer school, it’s better than what they had in there over the summer. there’s a sandwich, pasta and salad bar if you don’t like what’s on the hot food line, and if you particularly despise the food, there are tons of food joints nearby that deliver to PEA. my dorm is big on pad thai and bubble tea!

as far as i know new uppers amounted to forty-something this year. i don’t know if that’s a large or small number according to you, but people here are always welcoming of new students.

cookiemonster - it really depends on whether or not the people who got into exeter (and other schools) pick exeter. if they don’t pick to go to exeter, then spots free up.

Yeah, there are between 30 and 40 new uppers this year. Only a couple are repeats. I think there are fewer new uppers than new students of other classes. The big question is… have you taken U.S. history at high school yet, cuz that class is usually one of the biggest challenges for uppers, and it would be cool if you could get it out of the way.

Hi! I was just accepted to be a new lower at Exeter, and so far it’s my top choice, but I’ve got a billion questions. here we go…

What sort of classes would I take? I’m currently in honors Spanish 3, honors geometry, world history, english, and biology.

About how many hours of homework are there each night?
Is harkness math difficult to adjust to?

Is there any chance of having a social life? I've heard that there will be so much work that it's not possible to have fun.

     How big are the dorms?

Anyone know anything in particular about being in theater? Photography class?

How dressed up do girls have to get? Are jeans OK?

What are the weekends like? Visits to Boston/NYC?

This one might be kind of stupid, but I was wondering whether there were entire class trips?

Hi Exonians. Thanks for answering questions.

D was wondering what the martial arts club was like. She’s very involved with Tae Kwon Do. Do you know anyone that participates and could provide info?

at exeter, i think you’re required to take four core subjects: math, a science, english and a second language. since you’ll be a new lower, you’ll also be required to take health (i was a new lower. it’s kind of a pain in the butt to take health). that leaves you with one elective per term, and you have to be able to fulfill your diploma requirements, so you can take courses accordingly. it’s unfortunate that you probably won’t have enough time to take all the courses you want to - they’re all so interesting!

per night, there is probably about four to five hours of homework. you’ll have free periods within the day to do your work if you want to get a headstart or if you’re still working on finishing up math problems. harkness math is pretty tough, mostly because you don’t have a reference point like a math textbook, but i like the way that students work together to figure out problems and touch base on different math problems so that we’re all on the (relatively) same path.

of course there’s a chance to have a social life! a lot of the people who are social at school are fantastic at balancing their lives (schoolwork, sports, extra-curriculars). you meet so many people through your classes, your sports and your clubs, etc and you see them pretty often. since we have halfday wednesdays and saturdays, sometimes people go out to lunch or dinner in town. yes, there’s a lot of schoolwork, but everyone is in the same boat!

some dorms are huge, some are smaller. some are “houses” as opposed to actual dormitories. i live in the second-largest dorm on campus, and i think we have 48 girls. the biggest girls’ dorm on campus has like 60 girls, but some of the “houses” have 14 or so. the other dorms are sized comfortably, i’d say around 30 people. it varies!

there’s a great group on campus called DRAMAT and they put on a bunch of plays on weekends. if you want more information on that i can perhaps get someone to talk to you. i’ve taken photography 1, which was a lot of fun! i’m planning on taking photography 2 next year or something. i wish exeter kept its darkroom photography program, but digital photography is a lot of fun too!

jeans are definitely okay. belted jeans and a sweater with keds or flats were basically my uniform in the fall! girls’ dress code is much more relaxed than boys’ dress code… some people take advantage of it.

there are trains to boston pretty often - some people go to boston for the day on sunday or something. some people go into NYC for the long weekends. you have to get an out-of-town permission and you can’t really stay overnight unless you stay with somebody, but yup, it’s possible to get off campus.

as for entire class trips, i’m not sure what you mean… there are dorm bonding trips, but i’m unsure about class trips.

whew. that was long!

oh, and just to add - the four to five hours of homework is dependent on your teachers, how well you utilize your free time, and how quickly you can get work done well. each teacher gives about an hour of work a night, and sometimes it varies.
