Expanded Resume

Do you guys know how urgent it is to get the app in right away so that you can apply for housing? If you wait until October to apply, will you still have a good chance to get a decent dorm? My child is a Texas resident in the top 7%.

I’ll let the housing experts comment on timing. All I know is that my OOS student applied on 28 Oct 2015. We took a minor risk to reserve a housing spot (submit deposit) on 6 Dec, even though Duke and Yale had not yet responded. He got his first choice in honors housing (A,B,C) last week. From all the discussions we’ve had with others, just plan before Nov to apply and deposit for housing if UT is >50% probability.

If you are asking for ANY housing, I think you can wait until you are accepted. It is not that tight. The people who did not get dorms at all appear to be those who made their decision to attend in late April. If you care about which dorm, then that’s tougher.

If you want your first choice of dorms, then I wouldn’t wait much past mid October if that dorm is San Jacinto. The other route is to room with someone who deposited early.

Thanks! Thanks! My child is also looking at Texas A&M, and after going to the information session, it appears that for A&M, a student should apply to the school and get accepted right away so that they can get housing.

One other question. When you submit your application to ApplyTexas, can you submit one Apply Texas to UT and a different one to A&M? I’m assuming it’s a one shot deal. (While she will try to do a great job on the app no matter what, I thought maybe she should apply quickly to A&M because of the housing issue and then take more time for the app to UT.)

I want my child to apply before the end of August, but the AP English teacher has told them they would work on essays in class at the beginning of school so my student wants to wait.

Thanks again.

@micgeaux since your child is an auto admit for A&M, unless he or she is applying to Engineering the essays don’t matter so apply early. My understanding from reading CC is that A&M is going to holistic review for Engineering for Fall 2017.

For UT the essays are important in determining whether or not an applicant, including auto admits gets into the major they want. So quality of the essay is more important than being early.

You complete an app for A&M and then you can copy the generic stuff over to another application, in this case UT. I don’t think you can change essays between applications though. I did not try it though.

OK. So based on what @gettingschooled wrote about not being able to change the essays, she should wait until she nails down the best essays.

@K20903 She is applying to engineering.

I want her to get it done so she can enjoy her senior year. She is taking some hard classes so I don’t want to have the application “homework” on top of that.

Thanks again!

@gettingschooled What leads you to not think you could change essays between applications? If they’ll allow you to submit the same essay for all the schools on Applytexas, why couldn’t you use a different one? A&M couldn’t possibly know that you wrote UT a different essay, and if it did, I don’t really see it affecting admissions.

I only remember my S having to paste his essays in once. It does not mean he would not have been able to do it twice. We did not try.

I spoke with an A&M admissions officer and once you submit the ApplyTexas app, that’s it.

Does the Common App work the same way?

I believe they recently changed the Common App so that you can customize it for different schools.

In my opinion for housing at UT, October 10 is the super, super safe date and Nov - early Dec is when you should get it in to probably get into one of your top picks.

Also if possible I would send all three especially if applying P2 and I cannot emphasize how important I think it is to send in the expanded resume. I had friends on the bubble and I think this really made a difference for the ones who got into the major they wanted.

@micgeaux So once you apply to one college with the essays, you can’t change those essays and send it to another if you added revisions?

That is what the A&M admissions rep said today. They just so happened to have a college thing at our library this afternoon. I guess (just a guess) that you fill out the app, select the schools where you want it to go and press submit. Unless I didn’t ask the question in the right way, the admissions rep for A&M said that you can NOT customize it for each Texas school. Maybe someone else can weigh in on that.

@micgeaux I guess someone will be able to answer for sure tomorrow. Just a heads up to others- the separate apps did have short answer questions about why you wanted to attend A&M and UT. I don’t remember too much about them but vaguely remember my S having to answer those.

@micgeaux and @gettingschooled I was able to send different essays for different universities just yesterday.

They’re separate applications so I don’t see what all the commotion was about.

@TheAvidSeeker The application for UT and the application for A&M are separate???

Yes @micgeaux. You send in seperate applications for A&M and UT. You can do it manually or get the default data(biographical info, residency, etc) transferred to the new one.

Ok. Thanks. I did not know that.
