expanding vocabulary

Due to the shortage of my vocabulary, someone suggested me to read a book.
So I tried to read a book, and I found lots of vocabularies that I don't know.
If I look for the definitions, it takes me so long time to read just a one page and I get exhausted.
If I don't look for the definitions, I can read the book fast, but I can't understand some
sentences.
I know that some of the vocabularies can be assumed its definition by the sentence.
But most of them can't!

How should I do? Does reading a book really expand my vocabulary?
What else can I try rather than reading a book?

Read DirectHits. =)

What do you mean?..are you suggesting me to work with some word lists?

Huh. I was going to edit that post and add more info about direct hits but it seemed that it never happened. xD
DirectHits is a vocab-list but it puts it in a way that is interesting! It relates the words to current movies, books(I love their Harry Potter references). And at the end of each “chapter” there is a mini quiz.

It’s format is:

. Word:

definition
Interesting passage that uses the word with current popular stuff, books, history, tv shows. Even if you don’t know the TV shows they are talking about(as with me) it is still entertaining.

It helped a lot for the CR portion yesterday, except I know I missed 2(I didn’t read volume II (toughest vocab, vol. 1 is core vocab) so that may be why xD )vocab ones for sure.

i recommend Direct Hits too if you want a quick way to learn a lot of new words.

But, its not a bad idea to look up words as you read. If you think that takes too long, you can always write them down on a list and look them up at the end of each chapter or something like that. You could even write down the page numbers to go back and read the sentence in context once you know what it means. Good luck :)

Using a combination of things will help you. Start with the Direct Hits books to form a solid base of words that will probably appear on an SAT. You can buy the paperback books or they are available in an ebook version.

If you have time or as part of your school work look up every word you don’t know as you read books. The classic literature books (To Kill a Mockingbird, Jane Austen, etc.) are full of high level vocabualry and so are the Harry Potter books. There is also a website [Homepage | Freerice.com](http://www.freerice.com) that will help you test your vocabulary.
