If any current Cornellians can help it will be great.. Do you know if the prediction for each student expenses will be close to what they predicted? for example, do people spend close to 50,000 each year??

I was an NYS resident in CALS. Financial Aid estimated my yearly expenses at $32,000 this year and I probably spent closer to $34,000. $2,000 really isn't a huge difference.

Your expenses will vary depending on travel expenses, book and supply costs, adding money to laundry accounts and such. My own guess is that if you live on campus your expenses will stick closely with that the FA office estimates. It is when you move off campus that expenses can vary greatly.

Can you be more specific? Do you mean how much students spend on items besides tuition, room &board, and books?

how far is your hometown from campus? airfare has gone up tremendously...ie I used to plan on $600 getting a child from Ithaca to my city - and last attempt was $1350 - with 7 months advance purchase!! how many trips home do you plan on?

how much do you need to buy before you enroll - do you have linens you can use? a laptop or other computer? do you buy clothes?

there is a great deal of entertainment that is free/cheap - will you do those things? or will you insist on having cable in your room on your own tv?

I will be riding amtrak if I get admitted next spring. A ticket from florida to NYC plus busride from NYC to ithaca is incredibly cheap compared with plane ticket. Train from FL to NYC is only $113 although it takes 20hrs.

i actually found a flight from FL to ithaca airport (thompkins) for 180, and then a flight from ithaca airport to FL for only 90! was cheaper than going to syracuse or nyc first.

Where did you find that?

If people live on campus and choose the standard double bedroom and Bear Traditional, will they spend around $50,000 per year in average for engineering major?

@quick1865: What I meant was in general.. The total cost for one person..

@memphismom: I am from West Coast (CA).. Last time I checked the airplane fare was around $300ish from my hometown to ITH.. (the cheapest one of course) and I don't think I'll go back often.. So, it shouldn't affect the total cost a lot.. I already have a laptop that I think is still pretty good, so I don't think I'll buy a new one anytime soon.. I do buy clothes once a while.. and about other things that I should prepare before going to Cornell, I'll have a separate budget for it.. :D

@dewdrop87: Thank you.. :)

Wow after looking at expedia (only place I even checked) I can buy tickets to Ithaca for only 117 +stupid fees for next January from my local airport (gainesville, fl 15 minutes from my house), but I won't know of acceptance until December. So, I went and checked what tickets less than a month from now will cost (july 9), and it was still 117. Next week was significantly more though, but I will be able to book at least a month ahead if I get accepted, so hopefully prices won't go up to much between now and then.

It seems that going from one small airport to another (has 2 connections though) is cheaper in my case than from a large airport (atlanta) to ithaca directly. I guess I will be flying since train is only 4 dollars cheaper and that only gets me to NYC and not ithaca.

Can anyone add more?? :D anyone from college of engineering can answer my questions?? :D
