So I am from Northern California and I was wondering if anyone has any advice on the best (and cheapest) way to travel back and forth from school and home? Thanks :)

I had a bit of a different situation than you (I'm assuming) but what my mom and I did was fly out to NYC, which is waaaaay cheaper than going direct to Ithaca, stayed in the city for a few days and visited Columbia (another one of the main reasons for the trip) and took a bus to Ithaca. It's not the most practical method, but traveling to Ithaca by plane can be pretty expensive, the plane tickets to NYC plus bus tickets to Ithaca ended up being cheaper than plane tix to Ithaca alone. Plus NYC was like euphoria for me because it was my first time going there.

Not sure if that's the best way, but it was very fulfilling to me.

Most efficient method is to fly into Syracuse and then take the airline limo to school. It's slightly more work than flying into Ithaca although I've done both. Buy your tickets early to get the best deals.

I do a 5 hr drive from PA.

Look up the Ithaca and Syracuse airport websites. They have lists of their daily flights, and there's even a search feature called flyithaca.com. To reach Ithaca, you would connect through Detroit, Newark, Philadelphia, or New York City, and pay for the convenience. Syracuse has a lot more options, but it is an hour's bus ride (the school-sponsored bus or Greyhound are cheapest.)

A traveling Cornell student will have to learn to deal with weather issues. Fall and winter flights are frequently delayed or canceled because of bad weather. The other problem is that flights on break weekends get booked quickly, and the prices for the remaining seats can double or triple in cost.

Thanks for all the options! I will be looking into them all.

Jetblue flies from Oakland to Syracuse with a connection at JFK.....Continental flies from SFO to Syracuse with a connection at Newark....(most recent fare: $260 for March)....hope that helps!
