Hi, I applied RD this year, and had some new awards after I submitted my application. I know my counselor has included them in my midyear report. But should I still send a letter to Cornell relating to these awards to show my interest and enthusiasm? I've been wanting to do this (slip in the idea that I am very interested while writing to them and updating my application), but now that the job of updating is already done by my school, can I still pretend to send in extra awards and use the chance to express my interest? (because I don't think I said all I wanted to in my app)

That really depends on how much you think these awards will help you. If they are very trivial awards, I would not bother but if these are very prestigious awards (like a Nobel Prize =D) I would definitely send in a letter.

Thank you...but the point I want to make to them is not those awards (since they're already sent by my school anyway, and they're not THAT prestigious^^), I just want them to know I am very inteseted and have remained interested. and people have told me that updating your achievements is a good chance to do this^^so...should I?

I honestly don't have a definitive answer for your question. If it were me, I would not send anything (unless I thought the award would bolster my admission chances) because I don't think that expressing continued interest will help all that much. If I were an AdCom, I would assume most people who applied has an interest in attending.

Thank you. I don't know what to do...if I send an update would they be annoyed?? if I do no would they be like, "hmm, this kid doesn't even bother to let us know her new stuff..."?

And correct if I'm wrong, but I'm not sure that most people who applied has an interest in attending...if I recall correctly, less than half of the admits finally ended up at Cornell last year, so I do want them to know I have interest. ( I don't think my interest came across well in my app or interview...shame on me). and what if they don't know that I know that my counselor took care of the updating and just assume I am not interested enough to send in extra awards? or maybe I'm just plain crazy?

anyways, anybody else has anything else to say?

oh and just for reference, I'm applying to CoE. new stuff: I've got one FBLA regional 3rd place, USAA (United states achievement academy) national science merit award (teacher nominated me but I doubt it's important) and National Society of High School Scholars (not important), and I think I qualified for AIME but have to wait another two weeks or so to know officially...so are these too trivial that sending them in would seem odd and annoying? also for reference I've been in US for a total of 18 months and don't have a lot of US awards.

Conclusion: I want to send in a letter, the point is to express my interest, but I don't want the letter to be stupidly unnecessary...maybe I AM crazy but I would appreciate any further advice.

I don't think it would hurt at all to send in a letter to mention new awards since the time of submitting your application (even though supposedly your GC did this) and to express continued interest. If you can honestly say that Cornell is your first choice of school, then you can do so in your letter. If you don't send the letter and you aren't admitted, then you will always regret not having done this. And I don't think admissions people would be annoyed about it. They really want to admit people who want to go to Cornell.

Yeah, I don't think they'll be annoyed and I don't think it can hurt you.
I did the same thing.

I sent a letter describing two new awards I got in January... They weren't huge, like a Nobel Prize, but I felt they were significant. One was that my essay was being published in a compilation and another was a school prize for the Physics Fair.

I think in some cases, probably urgent, they accept fax…not too sure, but I think that sending them material that shows your achievements is definitely good… I would absolutely send in worthwhile stuff!!! GL

should I list the USAA award? I think it's on par with "Who's who" and that kind of things...is it too trivial to list?

As for the National Society of High School Sholars, I heard it's a scam, so I'm not listing it...if anybody knows that's not the case, please let me know! thanks!

and um this might sound stupid but do we actually describe the awards, or just list them? do we need to, and how can we sound humble? thanks!
