Extra costs of Duke/Durham??

so this is a question directed to current or former Duke students.......How much would you say you guys spend on outside costs per month? These include eating out at restaurants, going to bars and clubs, shows, movies, drinks, food, etc......I'm just trying to get an idea how much extra the cost of living at duke is.....

probably like $100 a month at most

I'd say even less than that, though I guess it depends on how well you manage your money. It is entirely feasible to not even spend anything, really, if you don't mind eating at the marketplace, using food points sparingly, and going to places for fun where you don't have to spend money (ie. just parties, campus events, subsidized events, etc.). I think I spent about 20 bucks a month when I had food points left, and about 50 a month when I ran out.

Forgot about laundry though, which costs about 2.50 for a load (it adds up).

it is not necessary to have a lot of spending money to fit in at Duke....some kids can flaunt money but just as many wealthy kids are extremely down to earth and there is tons to do for students who can't casually drop money on entertainment much.

however, in our family summers where our son worked (as opposed to public service) ended up in two summers in bigger more important cities with low paying jobs...we did not anticipate blowing 3000 per summer on rent for jobs that will help him get employed later....

On the positive end...we did not anticipate that junior semester abroad would be a bit cheaper than a semester at Duke..but it was cheaper...so don't be shy about foreign study

Not much...Durham is probably 10 percent as expensive as NYC. You really don't need to spend any money at all outside of the meal plan besides an occasional walk to the restaurants near campus. I'd say range of 25-50 dollars a week if you eat out 2-3 times a week at a semi-nice place and go to the movies or something.

Duke hooks up pretty much anyone who wants a job with one. I did research at the Duke business school on employee feedback mechanisms and got 12-14 an hour and worked about 10 hours a week (on my own time) - had an extra 120-140 a week for spending and got some awesome experience for my resume as well.

Living on campus -- I'd probably spend at least $100 a month, but that includes dinners out, cab fares to clubs, cover, and the occasional drink.

Living off campus -- number is much higher, but bear in mind, no meal plan.
