I'm posting this to ask for some advice from people who've been through this process in the past or have any particular input in this regard.

I'm an Int'l student, so the system of ECs in my school is quite different from the system which is prevalent in the US (as I understand it). Furthermore, I'm also heavily involved in Extracurriculars where the time commitment to these pursuits can't really be determined, and its in this regard that I'm making this post.

A large number of Application forms require that I fill in the hours/week and the weeks/year that I devote to an EC. Now, in my school, there is a system of clubs and games, however involvement in any inter-school team superseeds this system. Now I'm involved in Debating and Quizzing, two fields that require that a participant spend hours researching online, or working to prepare for competitions. To this end, particularly as I'm either a senior member of the school team or the leader of the team, I spend a good deal of time with future debaters and quizzers explaining strategy, or working out approaches to topics etc. If an Inter-school competition's coming up, then the team moves into overdrive with preparation going on for hours in team members' houses and in school. Therefore, for me it's almost impossible to demarcate hours spent in quizzing and debating as it's a constantly ongoing process.

I'd like to ask what the procedure is for such ECs, do I include time spent preparing, or only time spent at competitions? For me it isn't a conscious decision that I spend time doing debate, it's more of a constant pursuit that never stops, so that's why I'm a little confused.
