Extra Curriculars-Reading

Okay, this may sound completely stupid and “nerdy” to some people, but for all those out there who absolutely enjoy reading, I have a question!

So, I really love to read and I just find so much comfort in it. Reading is practically half my life, and I will read just about anything I can get my hands on.

This might sound confusing, but are there any organizations you can join that are focused on books/reading? Are there specific organizations that you can join that do anything with books and the art of reading? For example, you know how some people really love animals? They can join 4-H. Or people who love to do volunteer and relief work, join the Red Cross. Or how they have organizations for debate teams, sports fanatics, etc. I’m starting to look into more organizations/ECs that I can participate in (I already do sports and volunteer work) that will benefit me in the future, so I might as well look for something that I love to do. It’s better to have a few, well-rounded ECs than to do a bunch of things that basically make it look like all you care about are college admissions.

If anyone can answer my confusing and quite nerdy question, I would greatly appreciate it!

Have you considered joining or starting a book club?

@pugmadkate‌ Actually, I haven’t! My problem is, I live in a smaller town, and book clubs aren’t very common. Our local library is pretty scarce in my opinion, and I don’t usually run into other bookworms like myself. I live about half an hour from the city, so I might be able to find something there.

I’ve never contemplated a book club before; are they usually focused around a certain type of book or are they more generalized? I want to be able to find a group of people that enjoy the same types of reading that I do. Thank you for the idea!

I think the cool thing about the book club I joined at my college is that we often read books I wouldn’t normally pick for myself. It’s nice to broaden my horizons.

I’d say definitely try to start one! I started a creative writing club at my high school during my sophomore year, and you wouldn’t believe how many people came out of the woodwork to join. I met a lot of writers I didn’t know existed.

Book clubs vary a lot. Maybe the librarian at your school could help you? You could ask what kind of books are popular and see if that’s an area of interest for you.

@bodangles‌ @pugmadkate‌ Thank you both for the responses! Reading means the world to me and I would love to expand the hobby!
