What is more important to colleges, academic ec's (Math Team, Science Club, Debate Team, etc) or sports ec's (Hockey, Football, Tenis). By the way, I'm talking about for a student who is average at most sports. (Not the MVP of the state championships or anything like that)

Neither...I think the most important would be some kind of community/leadership related extracurricular, if you could only pick one type.

darkamaranth88 speaks the truth. It's all about commitment, the change you've brought with it, involvement, and leadership in the ECs. For purposes of evaluating ECs (assuming you're at a college that doesn't favor numbers such as a large public university) it's those factors.

To specify my question, I am captain of the debate team. Should I give that up next year for a spot on the varsity hockey team? I am not a star hockey player, but I am reasonably good. (I do not have time to do both activities)

my friend is teaching english to recent immigrants. He is in 10th grade and hopes to continue till senior year. does this sound as commitment?

Homer: I guess that would depend on the colleges you're looking at, and which extracurricular would make you stand out more at each respective institution. For example, if your grades are stellar, and you're looking at some of the more selective places (ones that look more at academics), I would say, go for the varsity sport, because that makes you more well-rounded. On the other hand, if you feel like your academic record is in need of support through other means, then stick to debate.
But still, in the end, it comes down to which one you like better...and the leadership position in debate IS going to help pretty much anywhere you apply.

or better yet, go for the one you enjoy most.

for me, personally, i think that ppl who dont play sports get a lot of credit too
it could be academic- debate, sciencey stuff or
outside of school stuff, like music, which always is a bonus
or really unique things, like writing ur own play or musical

I was looking on collegeboard and they said that volunteering is different then a ec. What are the diffences and which is better

how good does being the lead in a play coupled with science stuff (such as siemens or intel) look?
