Extra essays based on majors

I chose Chemistry as my major and now I have to write three extra essays. I was wondering if this is for all majors or only science majors.

Yeah, I chose a science major and I also have to do 3 extra essays... I think it's only for those with an interest in a field of science.

Were your science essays more creative or informative? I'm not really sure how I could write a creative essay with its stifling character limits.

I think I will write mines more informatively. I'm worried though--one of the questions asks me to write something besides school work that made me interested in science. I don't have any research experience and truthfully, my interest in science has stemmed purely from school. They suggested books, though. Any advice?

If I knew about this, I would have chosen another major.

i am in the same position as you axlifter. I confessed that I dont have as much experience as other applicants, however, I want to explore my interests more in college and how Brown can provide me with such opportunities...etc etc. I also mentioned school and stuff and how that made me interested. I dont know if that's the way to go but I'm not gonna go out of my way, lie, and name books I havent read before and s h i t.

I think most applicants to Brown going for a science major don't have much experience (same here), or else they would be going for the very focused math/science colleges.

That question asks about things other than school work.. haha I guess it depends on you interpret that. To me, school work counts as stuff other than things coming from my academic classes. I think it's worded very broadly to let us include almost anything that's out of school, but somewhat related to your major.

What science are you majoring in? :)

i wrote essays for engineering. i have NO experience with engineering, and I think my essays were pretty horrid.

same here. but it's three short answers...out of how many things we gotta write for Brown? So I'm not worrying...too much. They gave us lots of space for what KIND of engineering and I used that one up the least. Wowzers...

I wrote engineering essays...it was a hard bargain. They really want to see that we are actually interested in engineering. Its weird we have to do so much extra stuff, considering I applied to brown to get more humanities and less techy engineering stuff.

I agree that they make us do all this extra stuff to see if we're REALLY interested in science... but why would they want to know we're serious about science, and not something like, history? It makes me kind of think that Brown wants more science people, and so it gives us a slight advantage to be prospective science majors. That's why they need us to write essays to see if we're saying we're a science major just to get in, or if we're really going to pursue that major.

really??? oooh. i hope youre right.

Anybody doing Chemistry?

I seriously would have chosen something like environmental science if I knew I'd have to do these extra essays. They are short, though (except the last one). They also want a syllabus of our science classes? Weird.

where do they mention science sylabus? Shouldn't my transcripts have that stuff? I just wrote those 3 short answer/essay ish things.

They mentioned a science syllabus for chemistry, physics, and comp sci majors, not for engineering. I agree that the transcript should have our list of classes, but not necessarily the syllabus for the class. But I'm not too sure about this.. all I know is that I had to include a syllabus for a physics major.

How long does the syllabus have to give? The outline that my teacher gave me was really general, and it makes it seem like my physics class was a watered-down course when it definitey wasn't.
Ugh, I haven't written these essays yet, and I'm really not looking forward to it.

Oops.. I meant that they also ask for a syllabus for engineering majors.

My teacher never made a formal syllabus for the class or anything, so mine is just some topics that were covered in the course. I think they just want a general idea of what kinds of things you learned.. haha yeah my physics class probably looks a bit "watered-down."

I agree.. those essays were a pain to write. :)

Where does the application talk about a syllabus??? And for my non-school work experience, I wrote about Science Olympiad. It's still kind of like school, but I think it worked.

Actually the fact that you have an extra supplemental probably means it is harder to get in, they need more info to make decision.

i dont remember any syllabus crap anywhere

If you wrote all the essays required for your science major... then you should've seen the syllabus question. If not, then I don't know what you were looking at when you read the prompts.

So the syllabus thing was in an essay prompt? Which one?
