Extra recommendation?

If we want our mentor/coach/boss etc. to write a recommendation, do we just ask them to write a paragraph or something? I can't seem to find a form for this.

Thanks, and sorry if this question has been answered somewhere, I couldn't find it.

Well I asked my mentor for my math research for a rec. He typed up a letter about my qualities, my project, and pretty much how I am as a student as the rec (I don't exactly know what he wrote because he didn't tell me much). He said it was 2 pages-ish.

I think for an extra rec, anything goes, really.

You are also allowed to send in more than one extra rec. The rule of thumb is that a recommendation is supposed to wow based on its content, not who it's from.

There is no real form, but simply ask said person to write a letter (official stationery helps) and send it to the admissions office. Make sure to include your name, birth date, high school, and maybe a bit of other information to help them file the letter more efficiently.

yeah, I had two extra recs.. just create a title sheet (with basic info like KnightMair said) for the extra recs so that it's obvious they're not one of your two required ones. I asked my recommender (word?) to try and keep them under a page double spaced, but I'm sure the length doesn't matter as long as it shows a different side of you.

You could also give the supplementary recommender a copy of MIT's official recommendation form, if you so desired.

Thanks! that is helpful :)

/wait, so MIT allows 2 extra recs?€
as long as it adds an extras dimension it counts right?

b/c I cant decide which to give extra rec, my researc h mentor at a university or a friend/teacher i've known for 6 years back in my hometown who can definitely add another dimension of "me" that no other teacher at my school can.

Why not both, screw? Send 'em both in!

I sent in 2 extra recs, although 1 of them was in January after I got deferred. I gave my mentor one of the official rec sheets so he'd have an outline, but he just wrote a letter.

no, I believe you can send in as many as you want.. but just be respectful of the admission reader's time.. and make sure they all show a different side of you.

so if deferred first
an extra rec + maybe some new awards/news would be helpful?

I planned to send in 4-5. Only two ended up getting sent. One of them the teacher forgot to send in till the day I got in (EA), and one of them I forgot to even give my teacher (but I thought I had).

Moral of the Story: no moral. That's right, this post contributes nothing to the thread and is equivalent to writing BUMP.

I don't know for MIT, but that was what I thought when I applied Princeton ED - I sent them quite a detailed update of new awards and information (quite a few things came up after applying in October) but I still ended up rejected =p

That's what I sent to MIT, after I got deferred.
