extracurricular hook?

i'm in 5 clubs at school and a member of the varsity golf team. my biggest thing is journalism. my freshman year I was able to join the school paper class early-- it was usually limited to sophomores, juniors, and seniors. unfortunately, at the end of the year the class was cancelled due to budget cuts and low participation.

at this time I was chosen as associate editor for the next year and felt that I had found my passion. i along with two other staffers campaigned for our newspaper to be "saved". I spoke to my principal many times, spoke at two school board meetings, made posters, announcements, etc. as a freshman I was definitely stepping out of my comfort zone but I was and still am very passionate about school journalism.

the paper was not reinstated as a class, so the summer before my sophomore year the editor in chief and I cofounded it as a club. we gathered a staff before school began and presented our ideas to administration who found us an adviser and provided us with some funding. we began a website to publish stories on. this year (my junior year) I am co editor in chief and we have published three issues with another coming up. while we still run it as a club, my co editor and I are apart of the yearbook class (adviser also advises yb) as an independent study to work on the paper.

this summer I am likely attending a 5 week journalism program at northwestern. i will be the sole editor next year. I am very interested in a journalism or communication major and I also plan to write for a college paper.

is this the kind of depth in ec's colleges are looking for? would this be a potential "hook"? if it helps I am interested in university of michigan, Barnard, NYU, BU, Michigan State, Fordham, and a few others. thank you!

I hate this kind of question. If someone told this wasn’t a deep enoughnhook, would you still do it? Its a moot question, it can only help, how much, who knows, but if you love it, that should be enough

Unless you are a first team all state linebacker, your EC is not really a hook. It may be a point of interest and help with your app (I think it does in this case) but it is not a hook.

No, it’s not a hook, but that may make a great essay or boost the EC aspect of your application. There is a short answer question on the common app about 1 extracurrcular activity you did. You should write it on this although I’m not sure how much that one short answer question is taken into account compared to the essay.

Not a hook, but a great EC nonetheless.
