If the weeks/hours and hours/week vary a lot between the different grades I participated in it, should I try to come to an average, or report hours for this year?

For example, I am in Drama Club, and since I do far more shows senior year than freshman year, my hours vary.

Also, do hours spent during class time count? Such as Orchestra and Theatre classes?

Thanks for the help.

I averaged mine out for some, and others I tried to be more specific if possible. For instance, if I had 100 community service hours throughout my entire high school career, I wrote 1 hrs/wk 25 wks/yr, even though that was a little bit off. (Some weeks I’d do 3 hours, some none, etc.) However, when I wrote about my work at my town democratic office for the 2008 elections, I was more specific by saying 12 hrs/wk 12 wks/yr, because I knew the exact times I put in my hours. In other words, if you’re unsure exactly when you put in your hours, just average it out. If you know the specifics, then be specific.

p.s. Also, check the print preview before submitting. It turns out the common app gives you more space to write descriptions than what shows up on the print preview. I’m still trying to figure out if it’s a glitch with the print preview or a major problem with the commonapp in general, but either way I’d keep your descriptions short. Rather be safe than sorry!

Hope I helped!

Hours in school class do not count. But, if it is private lesson outside your school time, it counts.
