Extracurricular Ideas?

Hi,

I’m really interested in biology (not necessarily even as a major, just as a topic/subject) and I want to pursue it a lot more out of school. What are some independent ECs I can do involving biology?

Thank you!

Are you talking human biology (health), environmental biology, marine biology, zoology, botany - narrow it down a bit for us, please.

There are nonprofits that work in all of these areas and a volunteer can usually find field work of some kind. If you have a university nearby by, check out research asst. possibilities. Get a job in a nursery or volunteer at the zoo, animal rescue or human society. Join a “Friends of” group that fund-raises for and maintains a park/nature preserve. Find out if there are monitoring projects in your area via your local dept. of parks and recreation (our community has volunteers who monitor water quality in our neighborhood stream). Raise bees. Learn to garden. Take care of your bonsai. Learn outdooring skills, check out SCA (Student Conservation Association), get your certification for diving…

You get the idea. Anything that builds your skills in the outdoors and awareness of the inter-relatedness of biological systems (and the human impact there on) is a good starting point for a lifelong interest.

@N’s Mom I’m interested in environmental biology

anyone else have any input?
