9th grade:
Varsity swim team
Mock Trial (1st runner up at regionals, our school’s other team beat us haha)
Anchor club (service club)
Dream team (service club for athletes)
SGA cabinet position (we didn’t even do anything though)
Health Sciences Academy

10th grade:
Mock Trial (hoping to make it to states this year, my team is really good)
Anchor club (big sister)
Link Crew Leader (helping incoming freshmen get adjusted to high school)
Dream Team
Mu Alpha Theta (Math Honor Society)
Tutoring (in Algebra 2, PreCalculus)
Health Sciences Academy
Math Club
Science Club
Debate (maybe?? we haven’t actually done anything yet, ha)
Science Olympiad (currently on JV 1 team, but I’m hoping a spot on varsity will open up)
AMC 10 or 12, I’m not sure which one I should take but I guess I’ll just prepare, hoping to make AIME
I’ll also participate in other local ish math competitions

I’ve also volunteered with autistic kids for ~10 hours a week over the summer and volunteered at the library and red cross. I have over 150 volunteer hours total, I think

So I basically don’t have any leadership positions, since most of them are taken by seniors and stuff like Mock Trial doesn’t have presidents at my school, it’s a team effort and it’s headed by 4 coaches. I also really regret not doing any math or science related extracurricular activities freshman year. Sigh. I’ll probably do varsity swimming and JV XC next year but who knowssss

I’ll come up with coherent responses tomorrow. Extremely tired now.

But, in my case, do you guys think it wise to focus 80% of my EC effort on research? I’m thinking of making it my primary EC ( in many ways, it already kind of is).

@TeamRocketGrunt-
This decision depends on you. Are you confident of getting multiple research papers published? ( that would give you a significant boost,I believe)
If yes, go for it!
Awards at prestigious Science fairs will only reaffirm your passion and interest in research.

I suggest that you also continue with Debate and Mock Trial ( Since you seem to be managing research and the above activities without any trouble). This will add another perspective application.

Well, I used to be really good, but this year i’ve had to cut down on private lessons due to financial issues and i miss orchestra once a week for my ap chem lab, and thats effected my playing to some extent. I really don’t know about many math/science tests outside the ones offered within my school- central new jersey tests. i tend to do the best in the class in science, not so great in math though.

Help please!! Everyone here has so many e.c.'s, and I’m soo scared because mine are horrible. I’m in 9th grade, so I still have time to improve. Does anyone have advice on things to join?

Piano (10 years) - I take weekly lessons, play at ~5 concerts a year. I recently switched teachers, and my new teacher is pushing for me to start competing this year. (This is def. my main e.c. - I’m passionate about it and it takes up a lot of my time)

Music - I go to a precollege program at a reputable conservatory in my city, I take theory, ear training and chorus classes. I am hoping to audition for a chamber ensemble and/or chamber choir next year.

Girl up! Club - club that advocates for girls education in third world countries. hopefully will be a board member by next year.

Students for Soldiers - another service club, I’m helping my friend set it up & hopefully will be up and running by March. I will be VP or pub sec.

Ballet - I’ve been taking ballet lessons once a week for 3 years. I want to continue throughout high school because I enjoy it, but unless it becomes a significant commitment I’ll leave it off my apps.

As you can see, it’s really not a lot :(( I used to do debate and cross country, but my social anxiety keeps me from doing a lot of the things that I want to do.

Does anyone have advice on clubs to join?? Will joining things in 10th grade rather than 9th give me a disadvantage on my apps?

I understand that social anxiety can make it really difficult for you, but that’s all the more reason to try and push yourself to join debate or cross country. Pushing yourself can actually help you with your anxiety problems, or at least make it less obvious.

I see you have more of a music focus… you could try creating an ensemble group that performs at senior centers or other areas for community service. But I’m not sure what you really want to go into, so I can’t give you that much advice.

(Joining new things in 10th grade is still fine, the only thing that can concern adcoms really is if you join a whole bunch of things all of a sudden in junior year, cause that makes it look like you’re just doing it for college.)

Hezekiel, it seems that your major EC is your music, and you seem to have built up a pretty solid application around your music. If you keep up your dedication to it, that’d be your primary EC; you could send in a musical supplement if you’re REALLY good to boost your app.

Im a junior! Please help me out!
-Student Government, Elected Head, 2.5 hours a week (9-11th)

I single-handedly made Model UN a big deal at my school again after years of neglect for the club, and my deep and true passion for international relations and debate means that I am willing to commit hours of additional time to making sure this club runs smoothly and is taken seriously by the student body, school administration, and other clubs]

Hailbo: do you enter competitions? have you thought about taking uni/CC math courses over the summer/after school? Maybe tutoring in the library? Starting a math club? Maybe you could email college profs asking if they have any ideas for you to get involved? summer camp? just some ideas…

Here’s mine. I’ve been homeschooled k-12 (local schools are horrendous) and as a result started volunteering and really trying to build up any kind of ECs pretty late in the game. It took awhile for me to discover the admissions game. Any comments on how I can improve would be greatly appreciated. I’m a senior now (I know, really late) but I still want to continue to work on them, even through college.
