This question may be somewhat broad, but in general do UF students find it easy to get involved in extracurricular activities? Also, someone who went to UF told me she was unhappy because she felt there was not much to do there besides party, which she felt got old fast. I was curious as to what others thought about Gainesville.

"Because UF is such a large university, it is easy to feel overwhelmed and lost. But if you try to get involved and get to know the facilities you have at hand, UF has soooo many opportunities it's ridiculous."

The school provides students with a lake of our own where we can use sailboats, canoes, jet skis, etc., all free." When nighttime rolls around, "People go to clubs for fun. There are a lot of raves and keg parties."Also, "the Greek system is extremely popular on campus and they always have stuff going on. It is a good way to meet a ton of people." Much of hometown Gainesville commerce is tailored to serving the large student body, leading students to observe that "Gainesville has pretty much everything, including a ton of bars with something for anyone Greek, non-Greek, gay, Hispanic, Afro-American. If you don't like going out, the Gulf of Mexico is 45 minutes to the west, and the Atlantic is 1.5 hours east. Orlando is 1 hour away. The list goes on. Because of its size, student life at UF is limited only by your imagination, time, and/or course load."

If you go there, I recommend going to the student center the night the campus clubs set up booths. My son went last year and got involved in the surf club. He found his niche and has ended up loving Gainesville. He is also really into the music scene and enjoys the downtown clubs. He is not Greek, but has alot of Greek friends, including his three roommates, so he can go to parties when he wants to. Gainesville has really proven to be a great place for him and he came from a big metropolitan city.

Does it seem like the main social activity at UF is partying? Or do most people join extracurriculars and do a lot with them? Do the dorms, especially Hume, have a lot of planned activites for their residents?

To my knowledge UF doesn't have a figure skating team (correct me if I'm wrong), but I thought they have an ice arena on campus because they have a hockey team? Are there any figure skaters out there that have kept on skating while at UF or at least taught lessons to kids?

I really don't know about skating, but I'm sure if you look up the club teams, you can see if they have a skating team. Hume does have a lot of planned activities and it is up to you if you want to participate or not. I get the impression from my son that many people are involved in club activities, but at a school of 45000 people, you are going to have all kinds: partiers, non-partiers, participators in club sports, greeks, non-greeks, etc. The school is so big that you can find something to float your boat if you look for it.

"I thought they have an ice arena on campus because they have ahockey team? "

They skate in Jacksonville. The hockey practices are dry ice in Gainesville, ice practices and games are in Jacksonville. They play Division 3 in ACHA.

The FSU Hockey team plays out of RDV in Orlando.
