Which extracurriculars should one be involved in to be a strong applicant for med school? which are a must?

At all schools :
Clinical exposure of some kind
Leadership
Volunteering/Community service

At heavy research schools:
Research experiences (preferably of the non-scut variety, presentations and publications a big plus)

Agree with curm. Also, do things that interest you and that you are passionate about. Combine your interests with volunteering. For example, lets say you love playing the violin and are planning on volunteering at the VA. Go play violin at the VA.

Yep - this is pretty important. Its easier to devote your time and stay committed to an EC throughout college (adcoms like to see ECs that you’ve done for a long time), and it allows your passion and interest to show through during interviews.
