I’m a sophomore. I did football last year and hated it. I’m joining robotics and the swim team this year. Is that good enough? I also plan on getting a job when I turn 16 in March.
Thanks
To clarify. I want to get into uconn (in state) or Syracuse. I take average classes.
ECs are important, but don’t do things you don’t like.
awsomepolyglot is right- don’t do anything you don’t like. That being said, get involved, for Pete’s sake!!! If you’re even remotely considering relatively competitive schools, you need to get more involved in something, anything!!
Think about joining a club at your school. If there aren’t any in existence that suit your fancy, start one! One of my good friends got a sweet scholarship because she started the debate club at my school- she demonstrated interest, commitment, and maturity by doing so and got rewarded monetarily.
Just remember: QUALITY > QUANTITY
I know that sports teams and robotics are HUGE commitments- as a soccer player and track person, I didn’t do robotics just because of the major time commitment (now as a senior, I really wish I had as I want to be an engineer and my STEM EC’s are lacking). But I would join one or two clubs that really interest you and focus on them. It’s better to be the treasurer of Key Club or a team leader on Robotics than just a member of 8 different activities.
To sum it all up- find what you love and pursue it! Don’t overwhelm yourself with quantity, find fulfillment in quality involvement. If you pursue your passions, a college that’s a good fit is sure to come along.
Thanks a lot
I agree, only do ECS you enjoy.
Robotics and swim team sound like good EC’s especially if you enjoy them and stick with them and have a leadership position come junior or senior year.
