Hello,
I have a quick question about my ACT writing score from March of 2016. I know this was a while ago, but I’m actually starting to fill out applications, so I was getting a little worried. My ACT composite was a 32, but my writing score was only a 20. I don’t know why it was so low, but I’m worried that this may raise some red flags in my applications. How important is the writing score to colleges? Is it even worth putting the writing score in my applications? Thanks
I’ve heard that high composite scores and lower writing scores are common with the new ACT. Probably if your application essay was strong, your English class grades were good, and your Reading/English multiple choice scores were good, then it shouldn’t be a problem. I got a >1500 SAT total but a 16/24 essay, so I’m kind of in the same boat as you. Colleges put some emphasis on the writing section, but definitely not as much as on the multiple choice sections. I know Columbia and a few other Ivies are not even requiring the new SAT writing section, so that might say something about standardized test writing sections. You will not be able to just send colleges the multiple choice score; if you send scores from a test date, you must send all sections.
