F freshman year?

Hey everybody. So first semester of my freshman year, I got an F in Algebra 2. I was rebellious and stupid, and the class average was a D anyways. I've had a rising trend since then, and the year I just completed (junior year) all my grades were >95%.

How much will this F hurt my chances at places like NYU, Vassar, and Wesleyan? Clearly I'm a different person than I was when I was 14, and I hope adcoms see that. I asked my guidance counselor if I should explain this bad grade on my app, but he said it would sound like I'm making excuses and that I should just trust that they can see my rising trend.

My etcs and SATs are good (SAT is 2140), along with every other part of my app, but I fear this one F will haunt me forever.

What do you think?

bumppppp thanks :D

What is your overall GPA?

What was your year-end grade for the class?

Schools like to see an upward trend, and you have that for the rest of your years.

Are all these schools affordable?

A lot of colleges don’t even look at your freshman year. For example, an admission officer at Carnegie Mellon told me they don’t consider freshman year grades because it is a time of “adjustment.”

I would suggest contacting the schools you listed and asking them if they consider freshman grades. If they do, just look into other good schools that don’t. Don’t sweat it
